Description
Curling's ulcer. Gross specimen of an ulcer of the upper part of the small intestine (duodenum). This is an example of Curling's ulcer, a term applied to ulcers formed in the stomach or duodenum as a result of the stress caused by severe burns elsewhere on the body. Bleeding from an ulcer can result in anaemia, vomiting blood (haematemesis) and bloody faeces (melaena). There is a danger of uncontrolled bleeding (haemorrhage), which can be fatal. Treatment is with drugs that suppress the production of stomach acid, such as omeprazole.
