Description
This painting won the Award of Merit at the 2018 Tubac Center of the Arts Memberโs Juried art show. Such an honor and humbling as well.
On August of 2017, Janet and I experienced a beautiful afternoon at the south rim of the Grand Canyon, Arizona (USA). Along the Hermit's Rest scenic drive are many impressive view points. One of my favorites is Hopi Point. Mid afternoon sun creates shadow play and the rich colors Grand Canyon is renowned for. Add fast moving and ever changing cloud shadows and you are in for a visual feast. Kaibab limestone rocks and boulders, pygmy pines and Utah Juniper trees frame a dramatic view of Dana Butte as its serpentine curved vertical cliffs stretch out into the canyon. It seems to point us to famous Isis Temple across the the Black Granite gorge of the Colorado. I loved the diagonal lines in this, the stark contrast of warm sunlit hues against the dark, distant, north rim. From the moment I saw this I had a powerful desire to paint it. One of the most challenging endeavors I have ever undertaken. Standing 9 feet away from the original transports me back to that gorgeous August afternoon. This was the day before we experienced Transcendent Golden Dawn from Mather Point that inspired another epic painting. I love this extraordinary place. I hope it shows in my efforts to portray it.

beautiful, atmospheric, and just so impressive to see all the fine details and light and shadow plays across this Grand landscape that you have painted so magically well! the foreground details are especially incredible.
Connie Handscomb
There's a lot of detail here to keep the eye roving for a long time; you've captured the vastness of this beautiful place, Jerry, as you always do ... incl the vegetation on the side which is lovely against the hard rocks, the branch details of the {pines?} are truly fine :)
Jerry Bokowski replied:
This is a personal fave of mine. So, so nice to have you back, Connie! I always enjoyed your wonderful comments and encouragement. Thank you so much dear lady!

Superb piece of artistry Jerry. You are absolutely right about the fast moving and ever changing lights and shadows in this area; a true visual and dynamic feast for both painters and photographers alike. Impressive piece.
Jerry Bokowski replied:
Thank you very much, Hany. This is one of my favorite Grand Canyon works. I based it on an image my wife captured and I made some changes in the lighting and forground a bit. This work is currently on display at the Tubac Center of the Arts. Your work of our great southwest should be seen by all on FAA!
