Description
This is a clip from my memory. I left Antigua when I was about six years old, and when I returned as an adult, things had changed considerably. However, I do have certain clippings in my memory that I paint regularly. Please bear in mind I say "MY MEMORY"!) I recall there were two huge buildings close to the sea on, what I call, Market Street. One housed the vegetable market and the other was the fish market. Vendors had stalls inside the buildings. However, there were vendors who did their selling on the outside. They spread a piece of burlap on the ground and arranged their goods on it (as depicted here).
Nine out of ten people cooked on a cola pot and nine out of ten times it was made from clay. The vendor in this painting is selling coal pots, cooking pots, water pots, and flower pots all made from clay.
The man pushing the cart was called a Porter. He transported goods around the town--from shop to shop, from boat to shop, from shop to bus, etc. That profession is now obsolete.
People were at the market every day, but Saturday was the busiest. The vendors set out for town before sunrise and the buyers tried to be early so they can get the best quality goods.
There is much more to this Market Scene story which will be told in other paintings.
