Description
DH 88 – Comet
Designed by the De Havilland company in 1934 for the England to Australia air-race challenge. Three copies of the design were produced for private entrants to the race – at a cost of £5,000 each – with the winner being the Grosvenor House (G-ACSS) entry in a time of 71 hrs. The mandatory route was from England – Baghdad – Allahabad – Singapore – Darwin – Melbourne, with any other required stops for fuel, repairs etc as required. An elegant aircraft and an early example of ‘if it looks right it will fly right’ philosophy.
The Grosvenor House DH 88 had a relatively smooth passage apart from dealing with thunderstorm weather on the approach to Singapore – as depicted in the image above.
