Description
While visiting Columbus Zoo and Aquarium I had the pleasure of seeing the Polar Bears from an underwater viewing area, and could not wait to get home to paint him. The white fur underwater at the Columbus Zoo underwater tank just floats like feathers, soft and silty, puffy and back to slick. Total entertainment , one not to be missed. A polar bear's front paws propel them through the water dog-paddle style and at the zoo they have plenty of room to travel. Polar bears are strong swimmers; they swim across bays or wide leads without hesitation. They can swim for several hours at a time over long distances.A polar bear's nostrils close when under water, and they can travel over 6 mph. The hair of a polar bear easily shakes free of water and any ice that may form after swimming. Excess heat is released from the body through areas where fur is absent or blood vessels are close to the skin. These areas include the muzzle, nose, ears, footpads, inner thighs, and shoulders.

That's a cute paintng, that color of blue seems to cheer people up. Brings back memories of taking our son to the St. Paul, MN zoo...polar bears were exhibited like this, and was his favorite zoo animal. a cheerful picture. Vote/fv
