Description
WW1 Series
Close Quarters
One of the final engagements of the famous Escadrille Lafayette in early 1918. The Escadrille Lafayette was formed largely from volunteer American airmen and operated on the WW1 Western Front battlefields from 1916 onwards - as America was a non-combatant until 1918 the Squadron was commanded by a French aviator and supplied with French Nieuport 11 and 17 aircraft. The Escadrille became the equally famous Hat in the Ring gang in 1918 when America officially started air operations in Flanders. Of the 38 US volunteers 10 were killed in action.
The image shows a Nieuport 17 tangling with the redoubtable Fokker DVII in a typical close quarters combat.
