Description
The burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia) inhabits dry open areas with low vegetation. They select burrows created by other animals like prairie dogs for their nesting and roosting places. They are a small owl and can be found throughout North and South America - they are variously threatened or endangered. While burrowing owls avoid the midday heat, they are diurnal rather than nocturnal, a fact that sets them apart from many other owls. They have relatively long legs, so they can sprint when they are hunting. This image was taken in captivity; the owl was quite unafraid and indeed very curious.
