Description
Though they are not held in high regard by many, turkey vultures, also called buzzards or turkey buzzards, actually play an important role in the ecosystem. They are scavengers, not predators, and feed primarily on animal carcasses. They live throughout the Americas though they migrate south from the northern US and Canada during the winter.

One of my favorite birds. Did you know that they have a natural antibiotic in their blood? They can never get sick from what they eat! And, they have the best smell in the word of birds. have to admire a creature like that. Nice work :o)
Nikolyn McDonald replied:
I didn't know that, Nina. I did read that though they eat recently dead and decaying carcasses, they avoid those that have reached putrefaction. Very interesting and useful birds. Thanks so much for the nice comment and the information.

Cool capture. I love these neat birds. f/l
Nikolyn McDonald replied:
Thank you, Karen. They are much maligned, I think, but I read up on them in order to write my description and I found them quite interesting, too.
