Early sun brushes the coastal marsh grasses behind the Bodie Island Lighthouse along the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Bodie Island is one of a string of barrier islands off the shores of North Carolina. Lighthouses are frequent along the Outer Banks, where offshore conditions were particularly dangerous. Two opposing currents--the warm gulf and the cold Labrador--crash into each other resulting in unpredictable shoaling for historical mariners. This lighthouse was one of the many beacons along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, identified through unique daymarks (paint patterns) and nightmarks (light beam patterns).
