Dolly Sods Wilderness Area is located on a highland plateau in the Central Appalachian mountains of West Virginia. Unique alpine-like environments featuring heath bushes turn bright red during the autumn months, while heavy daily winds flag the stands of Red Spruce trees, limiting growth to only one side. On this morning, sunrise was muted with thick clouds allowing only a fraction of light to softly fall on the autumn landscape.

Thanks, Kinsey and Jared for the great words! This was one of those shots where you think you've got something, you keep tweaking and tweaking the composition, yet you're really not sure if the overall photo will speak to what you're feeling out in the field. So glad that folks are enjoying it now as I really thought that the landscape out at Dolly Sods was super unique and interesting and specifically, that this composition gave a look at many of the elements that made it such!
