A digitally enhanced image detailing a small section a typical street at Old San Juan. The photograph was taken with a diagonal point of view and perspective to enhance its visual appeal. The city is noted for its narrow, blue cobblestone streets all built by Spaniards during the times of Puerto Rico's colonization by Spain. Actually, the digital enhancement of the photograph cased the blue hues to become very intense. Cobblestones are stones frequently used in the past for the purposes of pavement of streets. They were used as materials to build the first paved streets. Interestingly, cobble is a small stone rounded by the flow of water; essentially, a large pebble. These large smooth cobbles were gathered from stream beds and used to pave the first "cobblestone" streets. Cobblestones provided and provide streets with a sturdier and cleaner surface than the original dirt roads used earlier. As seen in the photograph, cobblestones can display high color variation as any other type of rock. Different types of cobblestones are different colors, which are effected by the different types of minerals and mineral deposits inside them. This may be to the extent that some stones may have multiple colors blended together, including light and dark shades of gray, shades of red and orange, and various shades of brown. Such differences in colorations can also be appreciated in the photograph. More importantly, all those who visit the vibrant and active city daily, enjoy today walking and contemplate these beautiful streets of Old San Juan. Historically speaking, the original settlements that preceded the city of Old San Juan, were founded in the 1500's by Juan Ponce de Len.
