Description
This is one of four lions that "guard" the William Howard Taft Bridge, named for the 27th President of the United States, in Washington, DC (there are two lions on both sides of the western and eastern ends of the bridge, giving the effect that the lions "guard" it). The Taft Bridge, which is part of Connecticut Avenue, crosses over a gorge in Rock Creek Park, and connects the neighborhoods of Dupont Circle to its west with Woodley Park to its east. The bridge was built between 1897 and 1907, and the lions were made near the completion of the bridge, around 1906, by sculptor Roland Hinton Perry. (This lion is on the southwest corner of the bridge.)
