Description
Colon cancer. Light micrograph of a slice through tissue from a cancerous colon (large intestine). A cancer is the abnormal proliferation of cells that clump to form tumours. These can grow and spread through the body, damaging organs and eventually causing death. Cellular structure and cell nuclei (purple) are seen here. Cancer of the colon has no single cause, but genetic factors and a diet that is high in meat and fat, but low in fibre may play a part. Treatment involves the partial or the complete surgical removal of the diseased colon. Magnification unknown.
