Amazing Sights

When I was up at our lake house in northern Wisconsin a year or so ago and I was outside taking pictures of red squirrels stealing seeds from my bird feeder. My neighbor stopped over to say “HI”. I told him I was getting lots of red squirrels that were chasing my chickadees away. And I also told him I hadn’t seen any hummingbirds at my feeder. He said that he sees them all of the time in his garden. He said he waters his flowers with a light sprayer on the hose and they fly through as if they are playing. So – I grabbed my camera and said, “Come on I want to see.” He was more than happy to show me. We walked next door to his garden. He began watering and I began taking pictures of his many beautiful flowers. He had some called Bee balm. Not sure if that is how you spell it. But it sure attracted the giant bees. I was taking close ups of the bees while trying not to get stung – When all of a sudden a hummingbird zoomed by my head. Then another. I was snapping pictures as fast as I could. By the time I knew it, there were 7 hummingbirds flying through the water spray. My neighbor was almost as excited as I was. They are so tiny – yet brave enough to come close to us just to play in the water. If you have never seen a site like this – put it on your bucket list. It is one of life’s great things to see!

I was trying to attract the hummingbirds in Kenosha, but I have only seen a few. Seems like there are more of them in Northern Wisconsin. I also put an Oriole feeder out along with the hummingbird feeder. And every once in a while I get this really bright orange Oriole that goes from the hummingbird feeder to the Oriole feeder. Orioles are so colorful. I keep trying to attract more by continuously putting oranges and grape jelly put. The finches are liking that.

Auntie Jo used to have a hummingbird feeder in her kitchen window and it was fun to watch the hummingbirds - but we never saw seven at once.
