Jp Morgan, Edward S Curtis, Loc And Copyright

Very interesting Curtis died in 1952. The copyright on his massive collection of
Native American photos was lost to J P Morgan who died in 1913. Morgan had commissioned the photos.
The collection ended up with the LOC and has been in the PD for quite a while now.

I have begun a new series "The Native American Series, Curtis".

Do you have any ties to or understanding of Native Americans? What attracts you to this work other than being PD?

Edward,

I am finding I can do somethings creatively with the images. Different work for me.

Also I see Floyd's images and TL's western images and hat, and I like it more and more.

I want to work with these images. I have a few works completed already. Dont know if I will have time to post any today.

To answer your question very clearly it is the aesthetic I can create that interests me.

Love Edward Curtis and sorry that his work fell into PD. Consequently, there are many substandard reproductions of his photographs being sold on eBay and elsewhere. I hope you do him justice, David. I have the book about his life, "Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher" and have heard it's a good book but I haven't had time to read it yet.

Reminds me of finding a Southwestern Decor store in the heart of the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Ed,

My marketing is across the US. Actually a bit further afield than that.

Patricia,

I just aim to do myself justice. Not every artist does that much as you are saying about the poorer knock offs.

Yes, I realize that you don't make reproductions, and I've only seen those. I have seen creative spins on other PD images, of course. Van Gogh gets done a lot, and of course, the Mona Lisa. But I've never seen anything creative done with the images of Edward Curtis. Maybe they are out there, but not to my knowledge. So, I'll be very interested to see what you do with it.

Have your black and white 1 Curtis print laser etched into a wooden block. Ink it up and print some copies on antique parchment. Original block art by Dave.

An original Curtis photogravure would be nice to own. There is only one place in the USA to get your photo's printed using the photogravure process and it's very, very expensive.

Being largely in the public domain, innumerable Curtis images have been reproduced in everything from inexpensive knock-offs (ink jet prints, etc.) to fairly expensive platinum prints.

Curtis Centennial Project, Inc. has been creating contemporary, limited edition prints in a variety of media (cyanotype, silver, platinum, photolithograph etc.) since 1998. These posthumous, original prints (they are made from Curtis’ vintage negatives, not reproduced from prints) are clearly denoted by the contemporary copyright information embedded in each print (as well as other indicia). While these have been widely exhibited internationally, few have come on the market for sale.

Stephen I admire Curtis' work. More importantly why and how he went to the tribal peoples and did the work is incredible.

I need to get on with my day. So I will close this down.
