Wacom Drivers Uninstalled Themselves

i just spent about a 30 min putting my settings back. i was in the middle of an image. it was working fine. and in mid stroke, it stopped. the driver wasn't found. on the net they said to remove settings. so i backed them up, did what they said, it was found again. i restore - and all the photoshop settings were gone. in fact near as i can tell all my settings were never saved in those backups.

mostly what i'd like to know is - why does it do that? how can it do that?

there have been a few start ups in my computer where the tablet would not work at all. i had to restart the machine to get it to work. but this is the first time it did this right in the middle of a motion.

any ideas? because that totally killed my chill. i'm fairly annoyed at the tablet right now. i'm using an intous medium wireless. thanks

I hate when your chill gets killed.

Hope it heals quickly.

it was like i was kind of stress free like i kind of always am. and then there was enough stress that the room heated up a few degrees. i just hope i didn't make myself sick, it usually happens with those break downs. but i just can't figure out how it totally went out of memory in a second. while using it. on load up sure, but in the middle? i don't know theory being that windows is sabotaging my machine or maybe the memory is going bad. i really should upgrade this machine again. its been a long time. its just too much of a pain to go through all of that.

You may very well be right about the stress making you sick. go drink some Green tea real quick. & put on warm cozy socks.

green tea is yucky. all tea is yucky. i'm ok with the letter T. i got slippers, but the room is 78f right now, have the window open. right now i'm calm, but its too late now. i don't like having my work interrupted for dumb reasons. and a driver that killed itself, is one of those really annoying things. all the settings were just right. i just don't get it.

Hey, Celestial Seasonings tea isn't too bad. ;) I like the Christmas teas in particular - Sugar Plum Spice and Nutcracker Sweet. The latter is a black tea with vanilla and cinnamon. Yum.

Speaking of Celestial Seasonings - I've always loved the art on the tea boxes. It was always very imaginative and lavish. But this year it's been...dumbed down. It's kind of meh. Wonder why? Printing costs? http://www.celestialseasonings.com/products/black/nutcracker-sweet

Anyway, bummer about your drive acting up, Mike. I have a Wacom too, but (as yet) it's never done that to me. I just have to deal with Photoshop crashing a lot. :P (Just got my new computer but haven't exchanged for my old machine yet.) Good luck on your upgrade - hope it helps!

it does weird things. it flicks now and then. i find myself in some kind of hyperdrive scenario, i'm on the other side of the image just like that. or buttons stop working and i have to turn it off and on again to get it to go back. the only theory for that one i have is a conflict with my wireless keyboard and mouse, it may have a similar dongle or something.

Are you running Win10? My Wacom tablet and Win10 did not play well together. It was the key reason I downgraded to Win8.1; no problems since.

I rarely use my Intus5, now I need to see if it works with Windows 10.

I have read online about that Win 10 problem, Bill. A lot of people seem to be having issues with it when using their tablets. And I just realized that my new computer comes packaged with Win 10. :0

I could be wrong, but problems seem to be with computers upgraded to Win10 that were designed for Win7, 8 or 8.1. Machines designed for Win10, from what I heard, run great.

Just another item in my already long list of reasons not to upgrade to Win 10 until at least SP1 (if there are service packs... yet another discussion).

Mike,

Strangeness. I have an intuos 4 which has been on many different desktops and more than one OS. My overall experience is that Wacom drivers are among the most solid around.

Still, have you considered this?

Although there are a few negative reviews, overall it gets good reviews, is the #1 amazon seller and is the #1 competitor for wacom. I've seen it as low as $69. At $76 it might be worth a try, and if successful, worth that price to get rid of your frustrations.

i'm using windows 7, but i erased a phantom copy of win 10, can't say if that was a thing or not. i would only go to 10 if i totally had to. and even then i'd be kicking and screaming. i know some love it, but no.....

i never knew there was another tablet besides wacom, that's why i've always used one. when this breaks, i'll have to take a look at it. i can't just change it because of the driver thing. i do wonder why its so low though. or is it that wacom is just very high because of its name.

I use my Wacom on my now acient Lenovo Win7 laptop. I had to disable updates as somthing mid-summer caused some grief, but once I restored to a previous update it runs like a tank. The Lenovo functions more as my DAW, than image processing. I use the Wacom for editing scores.

No problems at all with my downgraded Dell laptop Win8.1 and Wacom, which in my main LR and PS machine.

Wondering if you had an OS update in the background which led to this. Peripherals can cause problems when their software doesn't play nicely with OS updates. One of the reasons I ordered a new computer this year with win7 pro is compatibility mode, where you can "dial back" the OS to a version where it plays nicely with the peripheral. Sometimes called XP mode.

Mike, don't know if you're running one of the versions of win7 which do this (enterprise, ultimate and pro if memory serves), but if you are, might be worth a try before you chuck the thing.

Mike,

Yes and yes. The Hiuon tablet is low-priced because (1) it is chinese, and (2) the price comparison is with wacom which many people believe are WAAAYYY over-priced.*

I was seriously considering buying one. Still am even tho the Intuos 4 runs fine. I researched it extensively and the conclusion I have come to is that it is a pretty good tablet. Mostly positive reviews and the majority of negative reviews almost read worded as from wacom fanboys and corporate hacks.

Biggest complaint is lack of support. But if you know what you're doing on a computer, should not be a problem.

Wacom was basically without competition for years, thus the inflated price. From what I've read, they seem somewhat frustrated that they now have a competitor with much lower prices and a good product to boot.

As I said, I may buy one just to see how good it is and put it on a second computer. As one review says, the price is "insanely low" so why not?

Here

Edit: important to note the first model of the Huion 10 pro was lacking, mostly about drivers. But the new version apparently fixed that and also some of the negatives of the tablet. If you order one, be sure to get the 2nd gen model.

* - from an article: "Price range for their (Huion) tablets is insanely attractive, like several times cheaper, like OMG-I-can't-believe-that-tablets-can-be-so-cheap affordable. After you look at the price from other companies, you'll realise that it is Wacom who prices their products high, sometimes too high. "

I use a wacom on my apple laptop and works great. I am looking at getting a Cintiq now but does anyone know of any problems with the Cintiqs?

BTW Mike I hope things get better for you!

Mike Savad

cintiq i wouldn't get myself because i tend to wear through the surface of my tablets. and i'm betting its the same. its also kind of expensive if memory serves. i wonder if they are color calibrated some how...

i wonder if those other tablets can do the other functions like wacom has. i did notice a set of numbers on the top, that must mean something. i've always hated the buttons on the sides of mine though. the old style had a series of tetris like buttons. my fingers always knew where to go. but this has a number of button that i don't know what i'm pressing. i like using that touch wheel thing that's the thing i use a lot. i don't use the touch controls on it. that never worked right. i had to shut them all off it kept triggering on its own. one gimmick that doesn't work. i also don't like how it shuts off even if i plug it in.

i do like the surface, once i rubbed off all that matte coating they put on it. my other tablets, i would chip through the surface. i ended up taping on thin plastic to stop that from happening. right now the surface is very scratched up and i think those scratches are wearing down my nibs faster. i may try polishing that out, see if that helps it or not.

i'm using windows 7 pro
