Eat black coots one time. That is something you will never do the second time.
However during the depression and WWII, when food was scarce, lot of people on the Central Coast of California ate what they used to call Black Mallards, which were black coots. They were served in soup kitchens and the different lodges and benevolent organizations that feed their members in a style that was just one step up from the soup kitchens.
Most of those lodges are gone but we have on that has been around that long and once a years they have a big fundraiser and they call it the Black Mallard Feed. But they are serving a Portuguese styled chicken stew. It is fantastic!
