For an 11-year-old it's probably the instant gratification of having photos immediately available. I love film and am delighted to hear young children taking an interest but in this case would recommend a digital point and shoot with lots of pretty presets. Maybe add a cheap printer, this will still be cheaper than buying film in the long run.
