The state and the National Park Service are closing Maui parks in anticipation of Ignacio passing near the islands.

The closures are effective at 6 p.m. Sunday.

Also due to Ignacio, Haleakala National Park will close the backcountry of the park on Sunday, August 30.

This includes all trails, campgrounds, and cabins in the Wilderness crater of the park. Park staff will re-assess conditions and re-open the backcountry for hiking, camping, and cabin use once it is safe to do so.

At this time, the rest of the park remains open, including visitor centers, restrooms, car campgrounds, and roads in the Summit District and in the Kipahulu District. The park is open for sunrise viewing.

All backcountry campers and cabin users have been informed about the closure. Cabin users have also been informed on how to get refunds.

Park officials will continue to monitor the storm and assess park conditions. Updates regarding the park’s operating status will be shared via press releases, Facebook, and alerts on the park website.

Visitors can also call the park main phone number (808-572-4400) and choose option 2 for the latest closure information. http://khon2.com/2015/08/28/maui-closes-parks-as-ignacio-nears-the-islands/

Hurricane Ignacio Strengthens Into Category 4 Hurricane approaching us . . Hawaii

1009 am HST 30 August 2015

. . cooler breeze this morning . just a slight breeze pick up now and then . it's really very still . . . such a relief from the terrible heat and humidity we've been experiencing on Maui . . it's raining . . . . so wonderful . . . the birds are quiet . . hear a few of them every now and then . . but they are more quiet than usual . . .

Ignacio has likely reached its peak intensity as a Category 4 hurricane and will now weaken the next few days as it moves north of the Hawaiian Islands.

(MAP: Follow Hurricane Ignacio with our new Interactive Storm Tracker)

The expected weakening trend is due to an increase in wind shear and slightly cooler water temperatures. The increase in wind shear is thanks to the proximity of the subtropical jet over the Hawaiian Islands. As Ignacio gains latitude, it will likely face increased shear, which tends to push convection away from the center of tropical cyclones.

Another Hawaii Threat?
The Central Pacific Hurricane Center has issued a tropical storm watch for the Big Island and Maui County.
