"files Could Not Be Read"

Thanks to Alexey Stiop, I was able to smoothly get a LR catalog onto my new laptop without any problems!

Now another problem has come up.... I decided to import a few images as a test, 19 total. I want all of my files on the hard drive so I had the hard drive plugged in. I then plugged in my camera and went about importing as I normally would on the old computer (hitting import, turning on my camera, waiting for previews to load, and hitting import; destination hard drive) After clicking import it said that "the following files could not be imported because they could not be read." What should I do from here? I have a portrait session tomorrow and would like to be able to use my new computer to process the images :) Thanks, everyone, in advance!

i would take the card out of the camera, copy the stuff on the drive and import from there. too much translating, importing and stuff. its bound to mess things up.

I think there is actually an SD slot in my laptop.... maybe that? Will try what you said, Mike...

Mike Savad

whenever possible, always go direct. you don't want the computer to try converting things while transferring. its also faster. just format it in the camera when your done.

Thank you, Mike! On the old computer, I could download them directly to the hard drive while it was plugged in and I was still able to edit them in LR and such. But it wont read the files from my camera on the new one when I try to download. All of the files are still read from the hard drive that were originally there, however. It was just the new images that are being downloaded...or attempted to be downloaded.

Shelby Young

I tried to import via the SD card and it still said they could not be read... will try to put it on the hard drive then LR now.

Mike Savad

that's weird. i wonder if its going through a sandbox of some kind and being reprocessed. typically putting stuff from the computer back on to the camera, the camera probably won't read it.

i'm not sure what your importing though. usually you copy the files to the computer. then you open the file in whatever program your using.

or it could be that the SD is bad, or it just doesn't understand the format. or something is changing the file in some way as its being copied on. like some drives are set up to compress files as they come in. and maybe that could be happening?

I just took a few photos around my house to test the importing. When I have the destination place open, it says it will go to hard drive, which I want. I had my brother pull up LR on the old computer to see if I had all the import settings the same, which I do. So I am not sure why it wouldn't read the files. It is strange because it did read all of the previews, it just didn't import them. Going to start googling it now...

I would never use LR to begin with. Is there a reason you are using LR and not a full PhotoShop program?

https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1245328

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/preference-file-locations-lightroom-41.html

Here's what I have found... and it looks like it has worked for everyone else. But I don't know where to find "preferences" that they talk about in order to delete them. I went to preferences in LR but can't find a way to "delete" it. Maybe I looked in the wrong place? Obviously, I'm no techy ;)

Shelby Young

Just saw you message Floyd... I plan on getting photoshop at some point. I actually really enjoy LR! It is great for processing, especially portraiture. But yes, I do plan on purchasing PS at some point :)

Rospotte Photography

Shelby, are you on a mac or windows? I think on a mac you will have to delete a preference file (plist) for LR.

Shelby Young

Thanks for the reply, Rospotte! I am using a Macbook Pro. That is what I have found, but where do I need to go to delete the preference file?

Floyd Snyder

Good to hear that. LR is great.... if you enjoy it, you are going to love PhotoShop!

There used to be educational programs to buy Adobe products for students at reduced prices. Check with your school. You won an award from Dorot College, they may be able to get you into the their educational program.

You are an incredibly talented young lady with a very nice portfolio at a very young age. You have a life time of growth and if you intend to apply yourself to reach your full potential, you need the best tools possible.

If nothing else open a kickstart or a gofundme campaign.

Best of luck to you!

Shelby Young

Aw, thank you so very much for your encouraging words, Floyd! I will definitely check with Dordt College and begin searching around for student prices on PS. Any tips on which version I should get?

Rospotte Photography

Shelby I found this (copy &paste)..The preference setting file is com.adobe.Lightroom4.plist and is in //Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/. I would move this plist file to the desk top, just in case you need to put it back. When you shut down and restart after the plist file has been removed a new plist file will be in the preference folder.

I always buy the latest and greatest. If you go to the any college book store and talk to the person that is selling in that department and tell him exactly what you are going to be doing, he will tell you what is the best thing going at that time. He may not know who the president of the US is but he will know what is the right PS for you! lol

Shelby Young

Haha, Floyd! Thank you :)

Rospotte - Thank you! I am trying to find what you spoke of now... hopefully it will all be resolved before my portrait session later today!

David Bridburg

Shelby,

The Photoshop CC comes with LR. For me it is $10/month. You might find it as a student somewhere less expensive. I do not know.

In my case if I updated every three years to a new set of PS DVDs, it would cost me about $1200 per decade, the cost of the monthly subscription.

The PS CC updates a few times per year on a rolling basis. LR might cost more if I bought the DVDs.

Adobe is interested in discounting the DVD delivery method.

You will always be able to get PS Elements for less, but it is less software, the app is different as well and no LR.

try disabling any virus or malware things you have. try shooting jpg on that same card and see if that opens. want to see if its an issue of transferring or what. if you have any other programs that can import that file see if it works there. and if all else fails. i think you said you brother's machine works? import it there and then save it as a DNG file, and that should work.

also, i don't know if this is a new camera or not, but maybe you don't have the right codecs. like when i get a new camera i have to update camera raw - you may have to update the program.

David Bridburg

Shelby,

You need to know a few things, the version of LR, the response earlier was for LR 4 I believe. You need to know specifically which
formats are not being read, or which singular format is not being read. Do not delete anything else. The program code usually will ignore what
it in and of itself does not need to be used. You really should not need to delete files.

Then with a large amount of salt hoping you find really good advice use Google. You can Google all tech questions and at times
get really good advice, depending on how exacting you can be.

Dave

David Bridburg

Shelby,

Mike should be on target, save in a different format.

Dave

I just imported them to the Pictures thing that comes on macs. I then took the files and put them on the desktop in a folder and tried to download from there but it still wont work. I had my brother get on the old computer that I used before this one to see if all of the import setting were correct/lined up. I did transfer the catalog onto this computer after downloading LR to the laptop. Could that be the problem, that the same catalog is on two computers?

Rospotte Photography

Shelby did you shut down and restart after removing the plist file?

Shelby Young

David, I did looked it up and found that it was the same for LR 5.

Mike, I am not using a new camera... if I shot JPEG, am I correct in thinking that the files would not be large, such as the RAW ones that can go 60 inches?

Mike Savad

i don't have a mac or want one...

but it sounds to me that you made a link to a file that no longer exists, if your placing on the desktop.

when i get stuff off my camera, i insert the CF in the reader and simply copy everything to the hard drive into my directory. i move the file directly into photoshop and work from there. i think you may be copying it too many times. but its also a mac, and they may have a different set up.

I did, Rospotte!

Mike Savad

raw and jpg are the same thing. the only difference is - you get more info in a raw file. you can still print large for both if they look good. raw is used when you want to play with the light, color, etc, and don't want to do that in the camera. jpg is smaller in size space wise. a raw can be 3-4 times larger in megs.

Shelby,

I am not expert on Macs, but do you need to load a driver for the camera or whatever?

Dave

Shelby Young

I when I downloaded from the desktop/SD, it says "Could not copy file to requested location."

When I did it straight from my camera with a USB cable it said it was because they could not be read...

David Bridburg

or maybe there is an addon for the format types for images?

David Bridburg

Shelby it is more than likely you need to load the camera driver.

Shelby Young

What is the camera driver...? Haha, I'm so behind :P

Rospotte Photography

Open disk utility highlight the hard drive and click repair disk permissions. After repair permissions has finished restart and try again. The plist file you deleted is replaced when you open and import into LR.

David Bridburg

Shelby did the camera come with a CD or DVD? It would be on there.

Or go to the Camera Maker's website and download the correct driver for your machine, OS and camera type.
It should be available for free.

Each component in the digital world, software to hardware, different hardware to hardware etc communicates.
Each component has its own format. So to get from one component's format to the next with the OS included in the
scheme are drivers. They are a little bit of code that translate from component to component.

Dave

David Bridburg

Shelby,

Dont feel bad, I had a job to deal with such things back in my 30s. I had no clue what a driver was. I felt
miserable coming up against this job the first time. You are not behind, you just never heard of them before.

Now you know.

BTW Drivers are fully automated, download and then forget. Easy.

Dave

PS please someone link me to advice to delete a file in LR. I have never heard of such a thing. Files not used are
ignored by the app. Invisible. Also if you got this advice from an Indian call center it is very wacky. I have had that
experience before.

Shelby Young

It did not have a CD or DVD with it. When I first got LR and put it on the other computer, there were no problems with the camera (my old camera or the one I am currently using) or downloading. I didn't have to download any camera drives or anything. In fact, a friend was even able to use it to download one time with no problems. So this is all very strange to me as I have changed nothing, except the computer, when I download. This laptop is running the same OSX as the other one (Yosemite). I am using the same catalog, camera, and operations. I will keep researching this and trying all of your ideas and hopefully will be able to come up with the solution.

In fact, the father in my portrait session later is a techno-wiz. I think I am going to ask him to see if he has any idea of what to do, just to be able to talk with someone in person :) I will update you guys later when I get home! Thank you all so much again for the advice!

Mike Savad

still makes wonder if anything is wrong with the SD card, or maybe your drive is full? those are two different errors, meaning two things.

not being able to read from the camera could be a driver issue, but once plugged in, camera's are seen as a mass storage device. so either the format is wrong in the camera, or your camera is shooting a proprietary format that the computer can't read. or the files are corrupt for some reason. or the program doesn't import those kinds of files.

does the camera shoot raw or tiff? try that format.

Try a SD Card Recovery software to recover deleted, formatted, corrupted or lost pictures, images and photos from the SD Card.

Floyd Snyder

I would no more think of renting software then I would renting a car for daily use.

There is nothing more that Microsoft woul like (or Adobe) than to have millions of renters that they can jack up the rates on when it suites their fancy.

Own everything borrow or rent nothing unless you absolutly have to.

Control your own future, do not give control of it to anyone, and especially the likes of the Microsofts and Adobe people.

Look at how the wireless phone people, or the Comcasts and Direct tv people are jerking people arround?

David Bridburg

Shelby,

It is not the SD card or in deleting files.

It is the Transfer has been redone. You went to a new computer.

The transfer is a broadened out app with driver involved.
Software can come with driver installed obviously, but hardware needs the install process.

Floyd,

I am going to use Adobe either way. I like the constant updates. I could wait for three years to update and spend the same amount of
money. My mentor has said Adobe has promised to keep prices in place. The outcry was so great they had to promise.

BTW I will be updating to Windows 10 for free because there is competition out there. Mr. Softy is more concerned with keeping the office market.

Shelby,

My favorite tech job was LAN Administration at Pratt and Whitney, a Fortune 500 company part of UTC.
I loved that job. I was good at it. It was all about gathering resources and implementing them.

I got promoted up and into a training program that was not for me.

Dave

Rospotte Photography

Shelby, I hope you get It sorted out. Could you post back on your progress or solution?

Floyd Snyder

"My mentor has said Adobe has promised to keep prices in place."

David, Fortune 500 companies change policies on the drop of a hat. One thing you can rely on is that if one of these suppliers sees a shorter path to quicker profits, all those promises will be gone over night if that makes them a buck.

Some of the most flagrant were the commitments made by HP and eBay not all that log ago. The changed CEOs the policies and the promises were all tossed out the window.

But to each their own. I am not giving control of my resources to anyone. Not ever unless there is just no other way to go.

Alexey Stiop

Shelby,

It sounds like you're using an external harddrive. If that's the case please make sure that the destination drive letter in LR import options (right pane of the Import window) matches assigned drive letter in Finder (for Mac) Another suggestion I noticed here - making sure that your camera drivers are correctly installed. On Windows it's usually not a problem anymore, but I'm not certain about Mac.

UPDATE:

Ok, so this is what I have done so far with the guidance of the person I saw today - verify disk permissions/repair disk permissions in Disk Utilities, wipe LR off of my laptop/reinstall it, check for updates/downloaded updates. And nothing has worked. Tomorrow I am going to speak with a photographer that goes to my church who has a macbook and uses LR to talk about any import settings or anything I could be doing wrong. Wish me luck and hopefully I will be able to share the solution with you guys tomorrow :)

To eliminate the question of if it is the card or the connection or the driver, try another card. If another card works... You can format that card and see it if works then. Formatting will delete anything on the card (better than delete all and should be done now and then, like when you changebthe clocks back). If you have something on the card, and it is a sundisc, they have an image retrieval program for free (see their website for mail in directions).

Shelby Young

Well, I promised I would update you guys -

It turns out the problem with importing was the with the actual hard drive! The permissions would not allow photos to be imported to the hard-drive, but it would import to the computer's drive. The guy I met with helped find where to change this and we tested it. It is working fine now, thank goodness. Now I can work on my photo sessions :)
