Pinterest And My Image

Art Prints

this picture of mine has had lots of hits on two different web sites, more hits than it has here, much more...what happens is when you post your pictures on a site like pinterest.. after a while when other people re post it , it takes over their name somehow...and in my case these two websites or facebook pages have a big following.. most of the time they have no idea, where the picture is from, and the people doing it either do not pay any attention or in another case, google has said my picture was public domain...this picture has been cropped down from the original and people still go crazy over it... that said, it is good advertisement, so what i do is send the people a notice , explaining to them what happened and that i want them to at least credit it with the right name and not theirs..in case someone wants to buy this picture. the first time i found out about this happening i was angry and told the facebook page i want a cease and desist... then i got to thinking, i should not have done that, because all those comments about how they liked my picture disappeared.. now i when i find out this is happening i just post along with the others and let everyone know where this picture can be found and who created it...

as you can see all this happened around sept of 2014.. during a time i was maybe selling and average or starting to sell at least 1 or 2 week.. i had no idea my picture was causing such interest! if i had known i could have probably sold more. but the bottom line is it is still good advertisement.. what would you do?

If you post your own work to Pinterest, you put the pertinent details such as artist name, medium used, where prints can be bought etc. You can also write something like "Do not delete original Pinner's details"...and then pray that no one does. But even if the details under the pin aren't deleted, the Pinner repinning your art will get the "credit", i.e. 1 repin, IF someone that is a follower of theirs repins from their board. You can't change that. Just be happy that so many are repinning your image :) It's good advertising and hopefully will lead to sales. If someone is repinning from Your board then you get the credit of 1 repin.

If you find that someone has cropped down your image or is posting it without crediting details then you can notify Pinterest with the URL of the uncredited image. If you don't want people pinning your images, turn off the Pinterest function Behind the Scenes.

John, you said, "...most of the time they have no idea where the picture is from..." and then said it is good advertisement.

How is that possible? To me, Pinterest is nothing but a site that encourages copyright infringement. I closed my account years ago.

Pinterest is good for that. Your work is suddenly owned by the pinner! The good thing is that pinterest is quick to remove it if you tell them that it is infringed or up without your permission. here is the link. https://about.pinterest.com/en/copyright
Also, I have a particular image that has been done the same way on pinterest, google +, twitter and various sites in Russia, china, all over! Too many to track down anymore. BUT, have not sold one print of it!
