How Not To Beat The Heat!

It has been beyond hot way down here on the Gulf Coast. My studio, even with the central air unit running non-stop has not been cooler than 80 degrees. I just can not paint in that so my sweet hubby went to Lowes and purchased a small window unit to keep me comfortable enough to paint. Purchased the extended warranty to be safe. He was installing it, everything coming along nicely and I was so excited that I would paint tomorrow in the cool air, then I heard a loud thud and my husband's panicked voice say "OH NO!" I come in my studio to see him wide eyed and no air conditioner in the window. I looked outside and there it lay, on the ground, twisted and broken! The icing on the cake came when we called Lowes and explained but they quickly let us know that dropping the unit is not covered. So, $250.00 out da window!!!

How awful!
Phyllis, check with whatever card company you used (if you used a credit card). Sometimes they provide coverage for accidents like that.

We used our Lowes card so I doubt it.

maybe your house insurance can covered the lost?

Think of it as a $500 AC unit that you are just about to get new?

JC, that's about right. He is gone to get another one for me. Thank God he pity for me still!!! LOL The only thing that they said they could do is to roll over the extended warranty so that saved a few bucks anyway.

That is a plus.....

It happens. Hate it when it does but stuff like this does happen.

That's bad news Phyllis! Sorry to hear, but hopefully the next one goes in perfect without any problems. Maybe put a soft landing pad outside the window just in case. Or stack some cardboard boxes.

i wonder if the mounting instructions or how the unit was made would cause it to do that. maybe you can work something out with the company that made it. its my main fear when installing them. most of it hangs out, it has to be at an angle and very little is actually holding it up. i leave it in year round just to prevent such things. lucky it didn't land on anyone.

YEAH! Nice and cool in here now and it only cost 500.00! I had better start cranking out some work fast to pay for it now. helped him install this one standind there outside holding it even when I did not have to. I made sure that we had no mishaps again.

Very sorry to hear about the incident. Thankfully your husband was not hurt. Might have been an extra expense but a lot better than fixing a broken body part.

It is good to hear that you are nice and cool. So stop posting here and get to work. LOL

More seriously, you have some incredibly nice pieces. I love the themes in your work and have no doubt you will easily recoup your investment in being comfortable.

Phyllis, I am laughing because I totally identify with your husband ... years ago before we had central air we had a window unit in the bedroom. It had turned cold into Fall and dear husband didn't remove it quick enough for me. And the wind was howling. And I thought "I can do this myself". Undid the little bracket thing that was screwed into the window and ... wham. That son of a gun flew out the window at such a speed .... and you know those BIG plugs they have ... took a huge chunk out of the window frame (thank goodness it wasn't out of my forehead) as it flew by -- back end of a bi-level, thus second story. Wasn't so funny at the time, but is now, especially because you have refreshed my memory!!! Happy cool painting ........

Keep in mind that I have done a lot of stupid things, and so don't take offense when I say this:

Homeowner's insurance and appliance warranties do not cover stupid mistakes. Those are the costs of education. Sometimes you have to break something to figure out how to fix it.

$250 for parts + $250 for practice and labor (^_^) = $500 total cost. NOW it should only cost you $250 for the next one.
