Glass Prints? Customer Request...

I had a customer message me today and ask about getting some of my art printed on glass?

Any Input...

Has this ever been offered by FAA and has anyone ever had this done?
If so, how did it look?
I could imagine this not being a very good idea due to breakage in shipping!

Point them at the acrylic. Much safer and very good quality.

I would think, but for some reason this person really thinks it would be cool to be on glass. They gave me a link to a company online that does it but it looks pretty expensive. I suppose if they really really want it on glass I could offer to have them done and shipped directly to them if they are willing to pay the price for it.

yes, it can be done, I seen them use commercially for big projects. I seen them in stadium, hospitals as glass walls and the effect is stunning with the lights coming through. I think it is very expensive if your customer willing to pay for it, why not.

Julie,

Depending on the size, it would be cheaper to get the images done on a clear vinyl/plastic substrate, by folks that make stuff for the sides of cars, etc. A clear version would be perfect and much cheaper than glass,

I just did a search and it appears this is the next hot thing. There are quite a few places doing glass now. Not that expensive.

*Rich, do you know of a company online that does what you are talking about?

*Abbie, has FAA ever offered glass prints in the past?

Next thing will be the option of a mirror in the middle for the ultimate selfie.

glass would be a pain to ship. heavy and very fragile. it would have to be tempered, and that means custom cut glass sent to a place to get it tempered before it can be printed on. it would be far too much of a liability i would think to send a window that can shatter and kill things.

After looking at the options, it looks like it's doable. If the customer really wants it on glass I can accommodate
but I think I will tell them to take a look at the acrylic option here first on FAA to make sure.

Did a little research and it is becoming or has been a popular choice: (especially in Australia for some reason?)

*Mike, it looks like other companies are taking the "killing things" liability chance?

Very interesting. Technology in today's printing world is amazing.

Not much different than shipping a framed print with glass or porcelain figurines, packaged correctly it will ship fine, have shipped barnwood frames with glass in them and no breakage. The possibities of display and creative lighting would look great.

depends how the glass is made. they make a storm glass that has normal glass in between two sheets of thin plastic. many places take chance because they don't know or can't see or perceive that something can go wrong.

Customers do not always know what they are asking for. Clarify that they do not mean acrylic first. Many people see my acrylic pieces and call it glass. Sort that out. Also, why are you worried about the price? Don't pass your assumptions on to the client just because you think it is pricey. They are asking for something very specific. If they think it's expensive, then perhaps they do not understand the value. If they don't, they won't buy anyways. If you can have this conversation in person or by phone you will be one step ahead and can tell by their voice.

Believe me, I can perceive it...I work for an Insurance Agency ;) I can see the liability risks all over the place but as *Bonfire said, the glass is already being shipped in framed prints.
I guess that's why I have a job, for all those wild liability risk takers!

*Bonfire, the deeper I get into this, that's what I'm beginning to realize. The display & creative lighting possibilities could be quite beautiful.

*Kevin, I agree, that's why I said I was going to point them in the direction of an acrylic print through FAA if they would prefer.

But I can accommodate with glass if they are adamant about it.

Julie,

Something like this:

After the "decal" is made, can then be applied to any surface, glass, thick plastic, etc.

Not to my knowledge

Bonfire, your name makes me think of using the glass print as fireplace screen, imagine with the light from the fireplace coming from behind.!
