...Even the not-so-fine print...
A while back my DVD burner packed it in and gave up the ghost, and being a bit tired of fiddling with the electronics I thought I'd buy a new external one online. They're cheap enough with minimal hassle to plug in, and a handy thing to have even after I get around to fixing or replacing my proper one. Eagerly anticipating its arrival as the days became weeks, it finally landed on my doorstop today, just in time for me to do some long overdue backing up. (I back up to an external hard drive, but these aren't quite yet what I'd confidently call a mature technology regardless of how many they've produced or what the review rating)
Anyway I enthusiastically opened the box and ripped off the wrapping, and was met with a small black-...
..empty case.
Yep. Just an empty case. No internals nor any sign of working parts.
"What is this scam!" my plaintive groan could be heard on Mars. "This isn't what I'd ordered!"
I cracked my knuckles ready for typing a tirade - no one does this to me! I am going to muck this company right up, and began by checking the order for details.
And there was a picture of it, and as I scrolled down I read in bold grey letters *CASE ONLY*
What the actua!? Where'd that come from? Surely I would have seen that before flipping my hard earned cold hard at it.
Obviously I hadn't, and now I'm left with an empty case, useless until I send it back, or drum up the desire to stuff a fiddly mechanism in it...
How was your day?

A hard lesson, Mark -- but one you won't forget.
I'm a compulsive fine print (and every other size of print) reader, as I don't like ugly surprises. Just yesterday, I spoke to a family member who recently ended up 2K out of pocket, because of not reading the fine print. A learning experience, for sure. :-(
Hope you can easily return the case!

Well that sux! Especially since you waited so long for it.
This is the reason I have +2.50 reading glasses scattered around the house. And a lighted magnifying glass. (these are awesome, btw. :) There's an awful lot of info crammed onto websites and products and literature inside boxes for products these days...and everything's a 2 or 4 point font!

I hate it when that happens! I hope they will take it back AND return your money in a decent length of time.

Thanks Wendy. You're quite right, I won't forget it - at least not soon hopefully.
Sorry to hear about their misfortune - scammers are everywhere it would seem.

I do like the idea of the lit magnifier Joy. I've needed on for a while
Tiny font font is a pain. In this instance though, the font was large enough, just nowhere near loud enough, it wasn't repeated anywhere, and compared to the headline I just didn't see it, or it just didn't register, or something
I'm really hoping they didn't suddenly change the ad on me, but on the other hand - if so, my faculties are in the clear (probably not)

So have I Abbie, just not with this length of waiting time for the mistake and disappointment to be revealed.

yeah, most cases are just cases, a new drive may be around a $100 so a case being around $20 is often too cheap. very often they don't come with cords - printers were like that. you got it home, but there was no way to attach it. usually i do a youtube search for reviews and they do an open box video or just a review.

Thanks Shirley. They'll definitely take it back, they're reasonably respected, and the cost to them chickenfeed.

You're right Mike, in retrospect the giveaway should have been the lack of a 'what's in the box'. I'm sure it was my "easy solution to a not very difficult problem" that caused me to not read it through

Oh Mark don't you just hate when that happens!
For one of my very first cars...an old clunker with vinyl seats...I decided I wanted sheep skin seat covers for the winter...those vinyl seats were cold! So I ordered them and waited what seemed like forever...they arrived and much to my aggravation were not sheep skin at all but some kind of stretchy fluffy material. So I went back and looked at the ad. What I had bought was not sheep-skin but sheep-kin! I fell for it.

Sounds bad Val
Years ago I remember someone responding to a 'Handy dandy anywhere hangers!' ad in a magazine. "More room in your wardrobe! Put them anywhere!"
He got an envelope with some two inch nails in it
Apparently back then (80's) this was perfectly okay provided you sent them something

Mine was buying a phone on (eBay) auction and paying quite a bit
Won it which was a thrill as that's rare for me but, when it arrived, not only was it foreign so did not have any of the things to run it but was also, to add insult to injury, broken
In teeny print that should be illegal, it said
For spares or repairs
Paid over £100.
Wish I had not won, as usual.

Yowch!
I hope you contacted ebay/paypal and got a refund.
I won a camera from ebay where the seller had described it as needing to have the battery frequently taken out and put back in. I googled for the defect to see how common, and not really but definitely in some, and the cure was to clean the terminals.
When it arrived I tried it, found that it was turning itself off, so cleaned the terminals - and voila!
But-
lousy picture quality.
So-
No more cameras from ebay for me

No refund. It was as described.
I bought a lovely little Canon from eBay. Needs a new lens with old one attached and still working albeit yucky.
Bought a great lens (new). Not working
Took to shop
Tried a different lens
Broken body, not lens
I didn't find out for ages it wasn't the lens so again no refund.
That being said, most of my things come from eBay or charity stores and I've been incredibly lucky.....usually.

There are bargains to be had for sure Abbie, but I've gotten wiser about tech. Where I'm careful with a new camera or lens, ebay sellers don't seem to mention how many times they've dropped theirs. They have the standard original you tube promo or Cnet review and shiny spec sheet, but never full disclosure of abuse. Unless it says "As Is" or Refurbished or New, you really cam't know.
How many times has the shutter fired? How many times taken to the beach? How many times has it fallen down a well? How many times returned for repairs? How many previous owners? Those dings and dents didn't come come from careless contact with a Cartier wristwatch.
And though they may supply sharp pictures of the item's condition featuring every grain of dust and fluff from the cleaning cloth, they can't tell the whole story.
The camera I mentioned still works, and works well for some things, but it was a risk even at a bargain price.
Perhaps it's relevant to the original price of the camera, and a genuine need to sell, not just to get rid of it Say a still high price on a Sony RX100 - they probably took good care of it, and just want something with a longer zoom.
Or they bought a cheap piece of broken and thought "Profit!"
But again, you may get lucky. For my money though, you can't beat brand new from an unopened box from a shop. It might not be the thrill of snaring a bargain, but it's still a thrill, a deep satisfying thrill - from money spent properly
