Just Had To Share This

In the past, I have seen posts re: friends and family wanting artwork for little or no money and how frustrating this can be. Yesterday, my neighbor stopped in, found me painting at my work table and said she didn't know I painted. Then her remark was "You are really good! Next time we have a community yard sale you should put some pieces out for sale"! She was stunned when I told her no, that no one at a yard sale would pay my prices! When she left, I collapsed laughing. What else could I do? Just had to share this one!!

That is amazing. And to think that in her mind, she was paying you a compliment!

OMG.....well some people think a lot of yard sales and they are fun but yikes! Yes we do need to laugh as everyone has different ideals.

I love the kind and gentle spirit your op was said in, and that same spirit comes though in your beautiful artwork. Now here's to hoping that you have a neighbor that owns a gallery and says the same thing as the yard sale, but insert "gallery" instead :)

Marilyn that is funny! So glad you can laugh at it. I guess she meant well...no doubt she was right about one thing...your beautiful work would be snatched up!

That is too funny. I once had a lady tell me that my work was good and that I should get at least $50.00 for it. I just smiled. Your work is beautiful Marilyn.

Marilyn that is hysterical. That poor woman - she is just clueless, eh ?

I am thinking of adopting a new phrase for these type of situations ; " Well, bless your heart..."

Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- Rick Norsigian kept two boxes he bought at a garage sale under his pool table for four years before realizing they may be too valuable to store at home.
The Fresno, California, commercial painter learned this week that what was in those boxes he paid $45 dollars for a decade ago could be worth more than $200 million.
"When I heard that $200 million, I got a little weak," Norsigian said at a Beverly Hills art gallery Tuesday.

Most people are looking to hit the jackpot at garage sales!

Hey Marilyn, I will overpay anyone, up to $75, for that Mexican Still Life piece. Ha.

Seriously, your work is quite wonderful. Thanks for sharing your story.

@ See My Photos --- great article re: Ansel Adams/garage sales! Maybe some day someone will discover my art that way too. Oh, wait---I'm not famous.

Um... actually putting some art out at a neighborhood yard sale isn't necessarily a bad idea.

Last year one of my neighbors stopped by at the neighborhood yard sale, discovered I do art, and recruited me for an art/charity event that she does -- a consignment boutique, which worked out very well for me. She also went to one of the art galleries I'm in, to see the art show. And I sold a small watercolor landscape to a different neighbor, who really likes it a lot. Some other people bought some cards. Someone else wanted a tattoo design... (who knew?) which I did for free on an index card, for fun...

It's a good thing if your neighbors know you're an artist, and actually see what you do, and get the idea that you have a real skill, and you're not just another hobbyist. Putting your art out for sale at a yard sale can be an easy way to introduce your art to neighbors & other people who aren't ordinarily art people.

Of course, if I do that, I know I'm going to get comments from non-art people that are mostly about them not being exposed to much art... but I'm okay with that.

Your work is amazing! Most people who are not artists/painters just don't seem to appreciate the time and effort that goes into the work!

When I first mentioned wanting to try selling artwork here, my husband suggested I try having a yard sale instead. My 12-year-old daughter, who is also an artist, gave him a look, said "No, Dad," in a firm tone of voice, and turned back to me to ask more about FAA. It's nice having your kid stick up for you! :)

Lori, three cheers for your daughter! A few years ago I did do the yard sale thing and was very disappointed. If the price was over $10 the shoppers walked away. At least I sold some pieces in the local gallery ----and then I discovered Fine Art America!
