Throwing Away Old Art

I dunno.
We're spring cleaning and *valuable* storage is taken up by my paintings. They've had their time in galleries and cafés but I simply have nowhere to store them when they're not up in other people's establishments.
Is it normal to throw out past works?

"Is it normal to throw out past works?"

I have no idea about that, but why not have a yard/sidewalk sale and make a few bucks possibly?

Can you donate th somewhere? Give them as presents? Goodwill. It seems odd to me to throw away stuff we've created

i suppose you could. but this is your best bet for the exposure promised in art donation auctions. i would use that over tossing it. you might get something out of it, and lose nothing.

Traditional media artists regular "cull" the herd so to speak. No different than photographers removing images from your FAA gallery because the old work is not up to the level of your new work. Donating old paintings or giving them to good will is generally regarded as a bad idea. It all comes back to, "If you don't value your art no one else will", by having a "fire sale" or giving it away you've devalued your art. I recommend not just throwing it away but destroying it before you throw it away so it doesn't get fished out of the trash and end up on someone's wall, (this has actually happened to an artist.) I know of several professional artists that have annual bonfires of old art they either think isn't up to their current quality or for some reason or another just wont sell.

I paint over them...be sure to keep a good, hi rs file of them first!

Personally, I would not donate, give them away or gift them if I wasn't comfortable with the quality of the work. However, throwing them away or burning them is a waste of resources. Like Marlene, I paint over them.

Painting over them doesn't solve the storage problem, though. I now paint on vinyl records which take up no space at all. (I have the completed ones in a dish drying rack and they sell fast enough that I haven't needed a second drying rack yet.) 😊 The hundred or so records waiting for their custom label and paint are in a box in the closet - easy.
I agree that giving them away is a bad idea so I'm thinking a hammer and Olfa knife should make quick work of them. I've sold a bunch and another 20 are hanging long term in my favourite pizza joint so the ones languishing in storage can go, I think.
Thank you for all the input!
