What Is The Best Way To Market Your Work?

First of all I want to say what a fantastic community this is, and I'm so glad to be a part of it!

Like most people on this site I pretty much have the creative side of things covered. Unfortunately I'm a terrible business person, and although plenty of people say they want to buy my work, I can't seem to sell anything online.

What are some marketing tricks you have used to get people to not only look at your work, but to buy it?

As is surely the case with nearly everyone, I would love to make this into an actual business. Any suggestions or constructive criticism is welcome.

Jordan, you only have 10 images! You need to upload a lot more to be found. There is lots of advice in the forum!

I usually find at gun point is most effective.

Thank you Jessica! I'm still new to this site... at least new to actually uploading my work and trying to sell it, so I appreciate the link. There is indeed a LOT of information here, so I'm sure it will help.

best thing you can do is type marketing in the search in the forum.

you need more than 10 things. you have a style, but no set theme.

Art Prints
i'm not sure why this looks like a photographed page, but its not that clear up close, scan this instead. add a description, add more keywords.

add a bio, you've been here for years.

Art Prints
you lack on keywords, descriptions and good clear images of your work. advertising starts at home.

Art Prints
at first i wasn't sure who this would be for, but you have no words again. i would push this toward meteorologists and other weather people. title isn't attractive, i think the picture can speak for itself. and it could be called something like - heavy rain or something like that.

ideally you do need more work, you need to create themes - animals, and whatever else it is you do. you can't keep the attention of people with little work. the images should be clean and sharp up close, descriptions tell us what we are looking at and why, and google uses them. keywords are the same. you should be in more groups, enter contests, add the bio. your view count is low, you have to push the work and spread the links.

There are no tricks.

Grab a chair at an outdoor restaurant near the sidewalk. Prop one of your framed pieces up in view of everyone. Sit back and let the conversations come to you. And don't let them leave without handing them your business card.

Jordan -- Welcome to the Fine Art America family!!

If one thing is common here about marketing it is that all of us do our own thing, what works for us.

My suggestion then would be to visit the "help" tab at top of the discussion board and look for the new members thread, plus others that attract your interest.

Also, Sean, the owner of FAA, posted this article many months ago. I suggest you work on one at a time and and move to the next once each one is done.

Its like weight loss.....

Millions and millions of people are overweight. They buy billions of dollars in products to help them lose weight. None of those products work, because people aren't willing to put in the hard work, hours, and sacrifice it takes to have a great body. They want something easy. Easy doesn't exist. There is no magic, only talent, hard work, dedication, and perseverance.

In art, everyone wants to sell their artwork. They want the quick, and easy way to sell their work and make a buck. There are many tips, and tricks, and stories of how this or that works and people make a lot of money, but the truth is the only way to make a good deal of money in the art work is with talent, hard work, dedication, and perseverance. I can tell people what sometimes works for me, and what I am doing, but ultimately you are not me, you have a different set of strengths, and what will work best for you will probably be different. The key is to work hard at it every day....really hard. Try some things, spend some money and time, find what works, and what doesn't.

Facebook is a boon for me. I've found ways over time and effort to build an audience that likes my work there. It didn't exist magically, I built it. Other people say Facebook is a waste of time.

We are both right....which answer is right for you?

just also keep in mind, its tough to have a vision and to get those people to like your vision. usually it doesn't work that way unless you can make things simpler. generally your making something for someone. if the images are random or don't seem to be focused at a certain type of person then you may not sell anything. like you wouldn't sell pink tutu's to a goth who wears black only. and vice versa.

Fair enough. I really appreciate the detailed response, Mike. Although I have been registered with FAA for years I haven't uploaded art until recently, so this is my first time actively marketing my work in an online community. You're right that the titles are not great and I need a bio (I've never been good with words but it's time to make an effort to change that). I'll also read the Marketing 101 article written by you that Jessica sent me.

And I totally agree Thomas. We live in an instant gratification culture and it's only hard work that will bring success, especially in the field of art.

I've definitely found, Monsieur Danl, that in person marketing works wonders, and handing out cards that direct people to this site is a fantastic idea.

Thanks for the link, Frank! I'll definitely check it out!
