New Member Needs Some Help

Hi, I'm new to FAA.com and trying to get a grip on all the things I have to do. Would ya'll mind helping me out a bit?
Here's my questions:
1. Is there a way to do a set commission/royalty rate on every product (say 20%)?
2. I notice that my uploads don't create multiple products. Do have to upload a different size for every product? And, if yes, is there a simple procedure (size) so I don't have similar images for different products in my gallery?
3. Is there a size/format that works well across all product lines?
Let's start there and see if I can get my arms around this a little better.
Thanks to all of you for your help.
Gary

One size on the products will do all products if the file is large enough. Sometimes I have had to go into edit and add the additional sizes. You may have to make sure you have checked the products in edit. I'm not sure what the file size cutoff is for all products (I think the duvet is different and has to be 5000 X 5000 pixels).

I'm sure others will come along and help you out. There is bulk edit but I have to ask every time I try to use it. If your files are not large enough FAA does not want files to be made larger to fit because of problems with the image looking blurry. FAA will not print blurry or lower quality images.

My camera images are around 4700 X 3200 and sometimes lower with a crop, all products show except the duvet. You can search in the box above for answers (FAA prefers you to use the search whenever possible).

1. Is there a way to do a set commission/royalty rate on every product (say 20%)?

We do not work with percentages.

On the top right menu, when logged into http://fineartamerica.com or http://pixels.com (whichever you are using mainly), there is a drop down with everything you need for the site

BEHIND THE SCENES is for all the tools you need to set the site up and PROFILE is where your site is. I know it helped me when I first joined to just play in there a while before doing anything else.

At this time you are searching for DEFAULT SETTINGS

2. I notice that my uploads don't create multiple products. Do have to upload a different size for every product? And, if yes, is there a simple procedure (size) so I don't have similar images for different products in my gallery?

Your uploads do if you price them in default settings or on the upload page. If you do not add prices then that size or item is not for sale

3. Is there a size/format that works well across all product lines?

Yes, the one your image fits. ie do not enlarge

You have to edit your images and put in prices for all the sizes

Thanks, folks...
Quick question re: "Yes, the one your image fits": I'm used to doing things @ 300dpi because I'm a print artist and have a tough time lowering resolution and up'ing pixels.
Can you tell me the "perfect" size (I assume in pixels), perfect DPI, and the perfect format (.png, etc.) that would serve to take care of all images across all product lines?

DPI does not matter, the pixels dimension does matter. Do not enlarge your images, upload the highest resolution you can.

upload the largest size you have and FAA takes care of the rest. Fill in the boxes with your prices

we print in 100dpi. jpg is your best bet because of the 25mb limit. don't enlarge images though if you have. and don't crop at 300 dpi or it will enlarge. there is no perfect size. the duvet covers need an image at least 5000x5000px however if your image is undersized, don't enlarge it to make it fit. same with with the largest posters.

The sizes depend on your pixels. Unlike other sites we never crop or skew images to fit standard sizes, instead allowing the artist free scope to just upload what they have

The only limits we have are that one of your dimensions is going to be forced to fit the following list:

8"
10"
12"
14"
16"
20"
24"
32"
36"
48"

The other dimension will be scaled proportionally to maintain the aspect ratio of your image.

We allow a maximum of 25mb uploads per image and If the file is larger than that you will, unfortunately have to shrink of slightly compress the images

We print at 100dpi up so that makes your math easy. 1000 pixels at 100ppi would be 10"

You may compress safely down to 10-11 before losing any quality on the print

You folks are so nice. Thanks for the help.
Two quick questions:
1) So, prints @ 100dpi come out crisp and clean?
2) If I have a print that's, say, 3000x3000 px @ 300 dpi, can I resample it to be 9000px x9000px at 100dpi without any problems? Same math (I think).

DO NOT UPSIZE!

no resampling. since your scanning, you can scan it at a higher amount, however the file size may be too big and you'll have issues with compression. the site won't print the image if it looks bad up close. i saw an image at 6500x6500 - that size is fine for most sizes. though be aware that squares have a limit of 48" and you can't print bigger. (its the paper size limit), i think canvas can go higher).

but if your making an image that's 5000px, don't enlarge it. whatever is native to whatever your using.

What happens if we upload at 300dpi and 5000x7000? Most of my images are at 300dpi.

Mike Savad

we only work with pixels here, dpi is a made up number. if you have a 5000x7000 image, and it looks good at a 100% then that's it. but if your upscaling your images from a smaller image. and you lost all detail, then it may not print.

Thanks, all --
I'm not scanning, but creating everything at 300dpi just because that's my nature and what some vendors require. It's that 25mb threshold that gives me pause, tho', and has me reducing sizes to make things fit. Urgh.

So, Mike, what if I have an image that's 7,000 x 7,000 px @ 300dpi and at 30meg? What should I do to get it under that 25meg threshold? Something's gotta give somewhere...

Mike, once my photos are in LR, I export at 300dpi. I don't enlarge in PS. I think I'll start exporting at 100dpi to be safe.

Mike Savad

dpi is just a number. if you were to crop something at 300dpi, you would be enlarging it. saving it as 300dpi only restricts the size it can be printed at as far as i know.

@gary, personally i would reduce the pixels a bit. looking at your images, they will print at those sizes. you can also reduce the save level. 12 - is overkill. 11 is usually fine. you can go as low as a 9, but don't unless you really have too. blocks form at about 600% on a 9.

Mike, sometimes you're confusing lol. If I crop my image in LR it will not "enlarge" my photo. It only enlarges it if I increase the pixels per inch in PS, which I don't do. I'm just going to export into PS at 100dpi.

Mike Savad

i simply leave dpi blank.

Mike, Sebastian, Lady Isabella, Suzanne, Jessica -- thank each and every one of you for your help on this.
I think I'm starting to get the hang of how I have to shift my output and appreciative that there's a community of folks like yourselves who can help those shifts happen!
