Paypal Asserts Copyright Ownership Over All Intellectual Property Of Its Users

Alarming message I picked up from a stock agency's forum: "Does PayPal now own our souls?"
Link to the article that made us furious: http://redicecreations.com/article.php?id=33160

In a nutshell: In an alarming new update to its user agreement released this week, PayPal has announced that it will assert copyright ownership over all intellectual property of anyone who uses its payment services. If I understand correctly, this means that they could override my copyright if I channel it through them in any of their services? PayPal can do what they like with my images, without consultation, interference or compensation? Is that correct? (PS: English is not my native language)

Cheers,
Philippe

Ahum, doing some more research, seems like people (and me) were overreacting. See interesting article here: http://www.thelawtog.com/what-do-paypals-proposed-terms-changes-mean-to-photographers/

In a nutshell:
- Images on YOUR site are safe.
- Content on YOUR site is safe.
- Logos you upload to PAYPAL’s site fall within the license permission you’re giving them.
- Images you upload through one of their services, you’re giving license to. (As far as I’m aware there are no services that photographers would upload their images to beyond the logo on the invoice)

Next time, I better drink a cup a coffee first and wake up COMPLETELY before alarming people ;-)

Cheers and sorry,
Philippe

Thanks Philippe. I'm sure you are not the only person to worry' but now you have done the leg work to put their minds at rest also. :)

This is certainly worth the mention....For those of us who use PayPal for invoicing, we have the option to upload our logos for our companies....I believe that would fall under this new ruling...

I still don't see how they can have ownership,of a logo uploaded on their site.
Right to use, yes. Ownership, no... For example... You can pay for Home Depot goods with paypal and I am sure they don't own that logo even though it is there when you are launched over to the pp site from the hd site.
