To Follow Or Not To Follow That Is The Question

Wondering if others feel compelled to follow someone because they are following you? Is it considered a courtesy one should extend to a supporter and admirer of your work? I've seen amazing artists on here who have huge followings and they don't follow anyone. What's your take on "following?"

No I do not. I follow if I love the work

I pretty much follow back whoever follows me on here. Or if I see someone on here that follows me on Twitter I follow them here.

Followers on here aren't really important to me because it's other artists. And artists really don't buy other artists' work.

i don't follow anyone. any person you follow is a reflection of what you consider worthy enough to follow. so if a buyer were just to browse, and he clicked on someone, and that person had junk photos, that could reflect poorly on you. if you want to follow go ahead, but you'll end up with a lot of chatter in your activity, which is the main reason i don't follow anyone. can't even turn it off or remove yourself from that list. wasn't worth it for me. i follow my mother's account as an experiment.

I stopped following since I discovered the effect it has on the activity reports, as the function is designed now... To much info!

Thank you all for your input. I'm still getting used to the interface of FAA and trying to navigate my way through.

The philosophy of following work and artists you admire is what I had been doing until I started to get a few more followers and was then conflicted about following them back. I'm not here to make friends this is not the forum for that but I do value respected artists feedback.

How funny you would respond Mike because I follow you and admire your talent and work and noticed you followed one person despite your huge following. What you said makes perfect sense about being negatively impacted by affiliation with junk images and what can lead to unwanted chatter.

Ironically I happened upon FAA while doing a google search for a particular themed image while searching for art for my home. I purchased the art and was impressed with the photography and quality of product. Since becoming a member I have also purchased other members artwork on the site which is probably not the norm on here.

when i first started i followed someone, work i liked. when i found out that i would get chatter from every post, new upload, reply, comment etc - i said, nope, bye! and never followed anyone again.

of course the other negative is, if you follow people, that's another way out of your site. so a buyer out of curiosity, may leave and look at a follower. of course that works in my favor just fine...

If I like their work, I'll follow...I usually find lots of amazing artists to follow on the "Recently Sold" page when I am using my iPad and first sign in. I don't really care if they follow me back or not...I'd only want somebody to follow me if they like my work.

I actually noticed Mike, that on our Artist's Website people can't see who we follow. I wondered why, but probably so they can't do what you mentioned...follow somebody right out of our gallery...which is a good idea.

it would make sense for the art site, you can't follow out on comments either. those were killed with a suggestion a while ago.

Both here and on Flickr, I don't follow or follow back unless I have a professional relationship with the artist. If an artist follows me I will comment on their work, or fav one of their artwork if it really is a favorite. However, when an artist follows and keeps making comments or starts to engage with me then I may follow back when their art, or how they do business, inspires me.

... I like a lot of what Mike said.

I'll hit follow if I see something I like. I don't look at the activity feed much.

Mike, even if you don't follow anyone, I can see who is following you and click away

I follow a few, but some of them don't necessarily follow me, and vice versa. I wish there was a way to go into our followers list and we could remove those we do not want following us. Not saying I currently want to remove anyone, but the need may arise at any given time.

@Greg, you can go into your follow list and deleted those you no longer wish to follow.

Darice you can't go your followers and delete your name from them

OK I confess I almost never even look at other peoples work. I do comment and favorite on occasion, never in response to others doing that to me. I just don't want to be overly influenced by something I see.
