Creating A Discount Code

I am ready to send out a newsletter containing a discount code. However, when creating a discount code, I see no way to specify that it only applies to specific types of prints or prices that are X amount or more. Example: If I want to give a discount of $10 or more, that would eat up all of my earnings on some of the smaller items such as greeting cards, phone cases, or maybe smaller prints. Does anyone know of a way around this?

If you give a discount code it is for all images and types

Do a percentage instead of a dollar figure, too. I just did one for me that is 30% off.

I had thought about doing a percentage off, but didn't want to complicate things by trying to explain how that works(because FAA prices remain the same). I may have to do this anyway.

Thanks

I think folks can understand percentage off. A quick glance through the "member news" indicates most do it this way. Here is a rough draft of the presser I am doing if you're interested. In realty, I think the customer needs to understand the discount only pertains to the artist mark-up.

Remember the code.

In anticipation of the coming holiday shopping season, Joseph C. Hinson is pleased to announce a "30% for 30 Days" discount offer. From now until December 2, 2014, get a 30% discount on any of the 525+ images for sale in his extensive portfolio.

The discount code is SVPCYC.

"Basically, you do your shopping and then hit the check out arrow. When that page comes up, there will be a box for the code on the right hand side. Just pop the code in and it will take care of the rest."

SVPCYC

"The cool thing about this," Hinson says, "is that you get the same discount off any print and any size. I've always been a big fan on the metal prints, which are also some of the cheapest by cost. So right now you can get a metal print of any size for basically a third off the regular price. But the discount is good for everything, so you can also choose a regular print matted and framed for the same thirty percent off."

It is important to note that the discount applies to the artist markup only. The pricing of the frames, canvas, mattes, etc are set by Fine Art America and the discount does not apply. "This special comes off of my mark-up," Hinson notes. "The folks at FAA still have to use the same materials and they still do the same superb workmanship on packing and materials. It's one reason I am so big on metal or even canvas prints. They are less expensive to put together."

Regular Shipping & Handling rates also still apply.

Not many people were explaining the mark-up on the member news. A few even forgot to give the code when announcing it.

it is difficult, and i do with we could say - $10 off X sizes. but it just doesn't work like that. best thing you can do is either explain it to them. or say 32% off. or just say its discounted and let it be a surprise.

I advertise the discount code and tell them that they will see the discount at checkout... It only confuses people when I try to explain how the percentage works and plus, I don't want people to know my markup anyway.

For people that get my business card, I write a "Friends and Family Discount" code on the back, which works well when I run into people while out on a shoot.

Thanks for the input everyone!

Joseph, thanks for the draft, that is helpful. I didn't mean to imply the public can't understand percentages--just that the part about the artist's mark-up might be confusing. However, you have done a good job of explaining it in your draft.

David, having people know my mark-up was also a concern for me. Well, I guess I'll just have to send this out, and see what happens :)

Interesting what Mike Savad suggests....I may just try it.

Use "discount code ABCDEF" for a surprise discount off of your purchase....
Let's me off the hook with specifics, etc....

Cheers everyone,
