Dan,

Should be on demand. Notice I didn't mention HOW it ended!

I recorded it and will watch it tomorrow night, but I didn't realize this was the last episode! Whatever will I do? It's probably my favorite show of all time. It's actually peaked my interest in history of that era, and I like getting a feel for the times that my grandparents lived and my parents were born into. Steve Buscemi is awesome!! But they went way overboard on the teeth of the actor who plays his younger self, lol. I miss Richard Harrow. Those were my favorite episodes.

On my list. No spoilers please!

Did somebody say BOARDWALK? LOL

BTW - sold a double-matted and framed version of this last Monday - so, I'm loving the Boardwalk right now.

Patricia,

Richard was one of the best characters EVER, not just on that show. The demons he struggled with.

Joshua House

Mr. Harrow was by far the scariest person on the show due to his ability to be totally detatched from his work.

Tamara Lee Madden

I watch it but haven't seen the final episode yet. Will check back. :)

Joshua,

I always said if I needed a "hit man" Richard would be the kind of man I would want.

The thing I liked about that character is how the war physically and emotionally scarred him. He seemed like a kind-hearted man that had his entire life changed by the war.

Since we are way past the first season, I hope we are not spoiling it for others who haven't caught up yet. Dan, sorry if discussing Richard will ruin that for you. It's funny about discussing movies or TV shows or anything -- some people have not yet seen them, so how can we discuss? After I see a movie, I immediately want to talk about it, but you have to be careful if people haven't seen it. I'm watching the finale episode of Boardwalk tonight, and after that I'm really going to want to talk about it. Which is the point of this thread.

So ... I will type SPOILER at the top before I start discussing... hope that will work.

John Crothers

I agree Patricia. I will edit this and put "SPOILER" in the title to try to warn people.

Hope to see you after you watch the final episode. I won't say anything until you do...

The show is so well-done that I'll watch it anyway, and enjoy the ride. Everyone knew how Titanic was going to end and it was still a great movie.

I would say stay away from here Dan. Titanic was ok knowing how it ends but imagine how much better it would have been if you thought it was a movie about a fancy cruise ship!

Tamara Lee Madden

It was a well done show. I can't say that I liked the ending but I guess it was inevitable.

Better ending than a cut to black with Journey music!

SPOILER -- Finale discussed***

Well, that was worth waiting for. The ending neatly tied up everything, and it was well done, in my opinion. I left feeling quite satisfied and a bit sad, of course. I was really afraid that the horrid Narcisse (great name) would escape "justice." I wish Chalky had been able to continue, but his end was dignified. Why aren't there any shows about this era devoted primarily to the African-American perspective? I would have loved to see Chalky go on and start a new life.

I kind of wish they hadn't "given away" the ending at the beginning of the show by showing Nucky swimming so far out to sea there was no coming back. You knew at that point that he was going to be killed. I would have rather had it be a surprise.

Still, I can't get past those horrible teeth on the younger Nucky -- huge fail there. The guy was a good actor and portrayed the young Nucky very well, but the teeth were too overboard.

I think the ending showed that you can be a good man at heart but have your life turned by making a few bad decisions. I wonder how many of us feel that same way. I know, I do.

I liked the beginning. To me it felt like he was going home somehow.

The teeth were overboard but he did a great job.

It made me wonder what the whole point was. It seemed an exercise in futility. Left me hollow.

Patricia Strand

That's true, Tamara, I can see that. He had "gone home" to the sea.

What is fascinating about this series for me is that the characters are based on real people and events. I think a lot of Nucky's story was embellished, but I don't know about the other mobsters, Lucky Luciano and Capone, etc. It's peaked my interest to read about them. My son is half-Italian, so he eats this up.

I like that they showed a little bit of the stock market crash, something I've wanted to study up on, also. I wonder if today's version of the mafia would be drug dealers. Somehow, that doesn't seem as "romantic" (tragic though it is).

Chalky was one of my favorite characters.

One thing that struck me when was Al told his son that everything he did...he did for him. I think that is missed in what a lot of these men did. In the end they were trying to make a better life for their family. Nucky was the exception as he had no real family to speak of other than his brother who he left a big bag of money to.

I didn't think the beginning gave away the ending. I felt Nuck was going to get killed, but I thought the same thing about Tony Soprano.

I think the end shows you can't really escape your past, no matter how hard you try sometimes. An argument could be made that Nucky SHOULDN'T have escaped his past after what he did to that family. He basically "sold his soul" for his success and in the end, it was all pointless.

I am sorry to see the show end but it was a good series and it is better to end up than to drag it on too much (like Dexter did)

Now I have to wait until "Game of Thrones" is back.

Patricia Strand

John, that scene with Capone and his son was very touching! I think I agree with your assessment of the series. Not going to start "Game of Thrones," however. Anything with "game" (as in Superbowl, lol... yes, I'm a weirdo!) doesn't interest me. I never caught "Band of Brothers" when it came out, so in finding a replacement for Boardwalk, I'm watching that. Love it. War is the ultimate game, I guess -- nothing compares.

John Crothers

I think you are shorting yourself Patricia. I think GoT is the BEST series that HBO ever made and that is saying something with that network!

Band of Brothers was good. My Grandfather was in the 82nd Airborne during the war, the show is about the 101st, but I still connected with it.

"True Detective" was a great series. Only a total of 13 episodes which was planned from the start. That is how they get "big" stars to do a show on HBO, no commitment for multiple years. They are doing another "True Detective".

"Deadwood" was also very good but it never really ended, the plug was pulled before they finished which was a real shame. No ending for that one so it will leave you feeling unsatisfied.

The series "Rome" was also good.

The show "Oz" was also great. A bit graphic but the stories were great. A lot of actors from that series went on to do other things.

I never watch dramas on network television. I hate commercials and I hate how they are "cleaned up" for TV. HBO gets great stories, great actors and great directors and they make first class work.

All of these should be On Demand and I hear HBO is doing their own version of Netflix next year.

The characters being melded with real people was an interesting aspect.

I feel like Nucky actually didn't have a soul left when he handed Gillian over to the commodore. He had already soiled his hands with the previous child... Someone can be likable but still have no soul. That's what felt hollow.

I watched Games for a couple of years but it got to be too much for me. I'm enjoying Homeland currently.

Patricia Strand

John, thanks for the recommendations! I never watch network TV, either, other than PBS. They dumb down so much, and the comedies are really lame no matter how many Emmies they win. To see a good one, watch "Getting On" or "Hello Ladies" (also by HBO). HBO is the best, really! Loved "True Detective" and "Rome," and based on your recommendation I will try GOT.

Tamara, I am interested in your comment about Nucky "soiling his hands with the previous child" before he handed off Gillian to the Commodore. What did I miss? Interesting about his losing his soul.

Yes, I liked the first season of Homeland, too, but I don't get Showtime any more, darn it.

Tamara Lee Madden

Patricia, There was another child that the commodore had Nucky "dispose" of. We saw her blindfolded in his bedroom. We don't know what Nucky did but he said it was taken care of. That's when he took over as Sheriff for the previous man.

Patricia Strand

Ooops, sorry, yes I do remember that now! I liked when he said a nickel wasn't good enough, then a dime was not good enough, and then a quarter was not good enough. It's true, once you get greedy -- where does it end, sigh.

Tamara Lee Madden

I liked that too. It could be greed. It could also be human nature in that we keep moving forward.
