Portraits Of The Elderly

Now that I am old and rather feeble, I find myself taking candid portraits of the elderly. It is not my style to chat up my subjects. I prefer showing their images without the customary smile for the camera.

Today, I had the honor of photographing a senior citizen who I observed doddering as she “walked.” She held onto the side of the building as she inched her way forward.
I was so tempted to walk up to her and to ask her if she was OK. But she had just exited a residence for the elderly and she was not asking for help. I did not want to embarrass her or scare her as it was a tough part of the city.

When I came home, I post processed her image. It touched my heart. Robert Browning’s poem came to my mind...

“Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be, the last of life, for which the first was made. Our times are in his hand who saith, 'A whole I planned, youth shows but half; Trust God: See all, nor be afraid!”

I doubt she would agree with Mr. Browning.

I'm not one for taking portraits. But here is a lovely capture of an old couple doing what old couples do best...Ignoring each other while staring into space!

Strength and character. I love it when you capture an honest smile. It tells me growing old is not so bad. I love the other shots as well. Great work !

But I guess I should have posted a picture of myself as an example of an old person.

OK, here's me/mine, but..........I do not admit to being 'elderly'...!!!!!!!..........feeble,slow of gait,white lined hair,growing,um,smaller.,failing vision........etc...unmentionable stuff..
.....but the cliche holds true...............the spirit IS willing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ... count on it !!.........so, c'mon........talk to me,Robert, be amazed ! I even had the widsom to stop smoking! Am only slightly older than you, at 77 in Nov.

Give this senior lady credit for still trying. If I were not married, I would have chatted her up and asked her for her phone number. (I am 72)

Kevin,
Some years ago, I worked with a lady who retired at age 100...At her retirement she said, "it's so nice to have an older sister." OMG, her older sister was 103!!!

The lines in this man's face carry the story of his life. It is a glimpse into the soul of a survivor - a man weathered by life and the elements.
It is a portrait without pride, but equally without surrender.

I find much beauty in aging! I love the character that wrinkles and creases bring to the human face. Here is a picture of my 94 year old mother-in-law. She is a Holocaust survivor and I took this picture of her with our cat, Lola, who we rescued from an animal shelter.

I don't know who she is or what her story is but she sure in photogenic. This is a "drive by shooting" which means I pulled my car over to the curb and used a telephoto lens 55-250 to capture her image. She did not know I was taking her pictures. I almost never chat up my "candid" street images. Life is hard enough without having a stranger babbling about how he wants to take your photograph because.......yada yada yada....

Robert: Thank you for this thread. As a portrait photographer, most of my sessions consist of newborns, children, HS seniors and engagements. Both children and the elderly are one in the same most of the time.

Parker: Your "Abuelita" shot is wonderful! I first saw it in a contest you entered.

Diana,
And thank U for your contribution...thanks to all of you by the way.
The elderly have paid their dues one way or the other, and none of us will get out alive. Now that I am 72 (an old 72) I see the handwriting on the wall.

I recall a snippet from a Dylan Thomas poem dedicated to his dying dad.

"Rage, Rage against the dying of the light...
Do not go gentle into that good night.."

Natalie,
Love your work especially so because of your neo expressionist/fauvist style....Whenever I tire of straight street images, I recreate my images into the fauvist style/wild beasts of color.

Just helped my parents pack up their home in CT to move south. Due to health reasons they will probably never be back to the area they grew up in.
