Pricing Across All Pod Sites

Hi everyone,

I don't want to discuss how to price work in other POD sites in this thread -- I want to discuss pricing your work across ALL the POD sites, including FAA. (I hope that's ok to talk about this here?)

I am trying to broaden my reach with other POD sites, but I've noticed that the artists on those other sites are pricing their work WAY too low (in my opinion). I'm seeing really exceptional prints selling for very low prices.

So, if I decide to sell there, I want to price my work very similar to the prices I have here on FAA. Is that what you all do? Or do you end up lowering your prices a bit to better compete with the market on the other POD sites? (That seems wrong to me).

I haven't sold anything yet here, but I do think my prices are very comparable to other artists who have similar work to mine.

Maybe I should lower my prices across the board?

Thanks in advance for any advice!
Jess

You have some beautiful images. Your prices seem reasonable and competitive where they are. They should, however, stay consistent no matter where you have them advertised. There are several links around here about how to price your work. I am not sure where to find them. You can look around or maybe someone will post one for you.

On most other sites you are stuck with what you can charge. Here you can get what you ask for. There you are on percentages or a fixed amount. Hence they price low there but properly here.

Plus often other sites have sales...when you are on a percentage you have earned even less.

Why bother? If another site takes a bigger cut, then let that be their downfall if customers shop around based on price (art is not a commodity like electronics). I want to make the sale on the site that give me the largest cut.

Price is rarely the issue. Being seen, making a connection with the buyer and having what the customer wants is what sells.

It took me two years to build up my business. Make long term strategies to build your brand rather then focusing on short term sales.

That is one reason I stay off most others. (Really all that would compete.)

There is one artist here (Actually, many artists here) that has/have a 10 inch print for 40 bucks yet you can buy the same image on a different site for 6 bucks.

Nope, not gonna do it.

Different sites attract different types of customers. On a site that focuses on things teenagers buy, you are not likely to be able to command a higher price. On a site that focuses on quality, fine art, its going to attract customers who know quality and are willing pay for it.

The nifty thing about FAA is that you can set a price for each size you want to sell, or simply not offer that size at all. Which is fantastic.
It's not that way on other POD sites, though. I spent several hours trying to adjust the percentages on another site to match my prices on FAA, and I only ended up with "well that's as good as it'll get". Some of my prices ended up being a bit higher here and lower there, and vice versa. It is what it is.
I don't do sites that sell at a fixed price and give me a small commission. Noooooooooooooo.

Hey all - thanks so much for the comments. I've decided that I'll sell on sites that:

1. Give a good commission
2. Let me set my prices very close to what I have set here (some are set by percentage, making it nearly impossible)
3. Display my art on a lovely website. Man, some of these sites are terribly designed and look so old!

I am still pointing my website (http://scenicmontanaphotography.com) my FB and Twitter pages back to FAA for now, as I think the more links I have out there to FAA, the better my stuff will get indexed (I hope).

Thanks again.
