Article About 5% Commissions: The Future Of Print-on-demand?

Hi all,

First of all, I'm new here on FAA and wanted to say how much I appreciate the feeling of "community" that I've found so far on this site. In the short while since I've joined, I have found fellow members to be very welcoming and encouraging.

This is probably old news that has already been discussed here but I just finished reading the article about the 5% commission trend for POD sites and found it to be very well-thought out and informative. It's arrival in my email seemed very timely today. I will definitely spread the word to other artists and encourage them to consider the facts laid out in the article. I am very appreciative that folks at FAA are wise enough to allow artists to set their prices.

The POD industry in general feels like in today's world of online business, they hold all the cards and contributing 'artists' have zero leverage. They also have little real interest in quality and see no problem in getting enough images regardless of price, because so many people are thrilled to just make a 'sale' regardless of how much it brings them. Therefor they feel there's basically no limit to how low commissions can go, and 5% probably isn't the end of it.

All I can say is that none of those companies will every get anything from me, so they'd better be right about the limitless supply.

" they hold all the cards and contributing 'artists' have zero leverage."

They also invest all of the money and take all of the risk. Why would you think you should have any leverage?

As you say, there are plenty of artists and images for them to sell. That is the beauty of free enterprise and market forces at work.

Why don't the artist that feel they are being taken advantage of build their own POD site and then they would have ll of the leverage.
