Photo Quality

I got an email about an hour ago saying I had sold a print (which I knew was coming, because it's a friend of mine). Ten minutes later, I get one saying the quality of my image was bad, and I needed to re-shoot it. The problem is, I had drawn the picture of my friend and gave it to her as a gift, so I don't have the original. I'm in the Midwest; she's in Cali lol. I tried to tweak the image on my computer to make it more clear - haven't heard back from them if it was accepted or not. But I'm thinking I need to re-shoot ALL of my images to be safe. My eyes aren't that great, and I don't always see the blur. I'm wondering if I should try scanning them instead. If I do scan, what specifications (I'm not tech savvy) should I go for?

Scan at the best quality that you can...I do mine at 600 dpi...keep in mind that 23 MB is really the largest file size that FAA will accept. They say 25 MB, but by the time you load it (it seems to add to the total) you really can't be much bigger than 23ish.

Afraid there's nothing much you can do to fix the blur. Perhaps running that one through a painting program would make it printable...

Good luck...it will be worth the extra work~

as long as your friend says she doesn't ever need to return it, they will often print it.

don't shoot anything. use a scanner. you have tight and loose crops and the images are not at all sharp up close. scan them, i go for even higher than 600dpi, often 2400dpi, just to be on the safe side for the future.

but she can insist, and they may still print it. but you will probably lose the sale.

Thank You. I'm going to scan - A friend has offered me the use of hers, so I will be busy this weekend doing that. They told me they were going to go ahead and print from the second one I sent them, and if my friend doesn't like it, she can always return it. Thank goodness, the customer was someone I know well. I really want to do things properly. You all have been very kind (and patient).

Thank You, Everyone for your input. I canceled the sale, and she's just going to frame the original which is in her possession. In the meantime, I did scan everything and re-upload them. I lost much of the color/vibrancy, but I chose not to do any computer enhancements at this time because I'm not sure if that distorts the image or not. I appreciate your help. Have a great weekend.

you'll have to tweak the colors after, though some scanners do come with a colormetrics option that allows you to tweak it then.

Thanks, Mike. I did tweak a little after I scanned, but it did not change them too much. My smaller prints seemed to retain their color. I will play around with them again. BTW, love your profile pic ;)

i change them each month, thanks...

when you shot with a camera, you were using probably an incandescent light which warms things. and the scanner will make it more blue because the light is whiter.

That makes sense ... I spent several hours last night scanning everything at 600 dpi. However, I'm taking the time now to re-scan at 2400 to see if it's more do-able. Will take a while, bt I've got nothing else to do anyway. It's an educational process for me. I hate technology, but I guess I need to learn some of it. I'd like to show my work in the best possible way.

just be sure the 2400dpi isn't interpolated. many scanners will go that high, but the stretch the image and you don't want that. i have a photo scanner, i think the max is 6400dpi or something like that. so if your using a basic scanner, the limit may be 1200 or so, you'll have to double check the true limits.

Well, it's letting me scan at 1200 and 2400. However, my computer won't let me save them. I keep getting a message saying the disk is full or read only. I'll stick with the 600 for now, and pray if anyone orders anything it will be good enough. Grrrr.

its a good time to clean out your disk, because if its full, not much will work right. unless your trying to copy it to a thumb drive or something.

I don't know why it's doing what it is ... It actually lets me save the scanned copy, but once I go in and brighten or tweak the color, I can't resave it, even with a different name. It's making my head foggy. I'm going to lie down ... or have a cocktail ... or both.
