Hmmm - A Newbie, Me. Any Tips On Self-promotion? :)

I don't know what the market is like for photography but what a great site this...I'm trying the free 25 images to test the waters. Any tips on driving traffic to one's site? Thanks!

25 images won't get you noticed in a sea of hundreds of thousands. Skip a few Starbucks coffees and invest the $30 in your business.

What Ed said... and change your Avatar. You would be better off with something warm and fuzzy or at least neutral. That pic is going to turn off all the people that hate guns, imho.

Search the threads on "marketing" and you will get more stuff then you can read.

Welcome aboard and best of luck to you!

haha yep that sounds about right...I'm not really a gun dude BTW, they're replicas used for a film (they don't let us have real ones in the UK)...anyway thanks & point taken

the market is great for photography, but asking that is like asking is the city great for cars? yes and no, it depends. i do like the avatar, but unless your selling western related things, i would get something more this century.

you have a real mixed bag of things, with no one certain theme, so that will work against you.

people may not like the heavy blur effects you putting on some of these, that that may work against you as well. you don't have enough keywords or descriptions. it will make it harder to be seen in google, on here, and to tell people where it was shot and what they are looking at. you want a bio and galleries - you don't want a jumble. beyond that, without critiquing the images, you will have to find any place that has a place for you to enter your site. but you'll want more images, 25 isn't that much. on this site its hard to test the waters since you have to do your own advertising, and people tend to like a style over anything else. having a small selection like this, you won't get a good test.

Jack,

Welcome!

Nice stuff and cheap!!! I would raise your prices, especially the larger sizes. I charge nearly 3 times that for a 24" x 36" print, compared to your $99.05!

Keywords! Need more and better ones too. Search "playing cards" and then restrict the search to just photography and and you'll see that "playing cards" has 1,930 images come up. Now you don't have "playing cards" in your keywords, just cards. So a search in "cards" results in 10,000+ images in a search. See where I'm going with this!

So you have some really nice images, cheap, but you need to be seen, if you want to sell anyhting here, which is a tough market,by the way. The "inventory" will be another thing that will hold you back, because it seems that numbers play a role here in the search results,

Good Luck!

First, your work is good and at least a good part of what I looked at unique enough to get attention. If it gets attention, it is good enough to sell.

The Avatar..... Hmmmm, I would say it depends on what market you are really going to push. If you want a general audience, then a warm fuzzy change might be in order. On the other hand, if you are pushing images like the one below I think it not only fits but would help sell such things....

Great stuff, thank you for all for the input! Rich, that's very useful information & I really ought to know better about keywords as an iStock contributor & I will definitely take on board about the prices...I've been way too lazy w this so far...Mike Savad thanks for some great advice, the best bet I think is to take the $30 plunge & set up some galleries ...and JC Findley I think you're exactly correct about changing the avatar as I don't really do a lot of wild west stuff even though, Lulu, I'm from the badlands of Missouri
but live in Somerset (and I like poker) ... Cheers y'all
