Out Of Place?

At the end of a hot summer day, watermelon is always a refreshing treat! I have uploaded this photo thinking that it would be a "refreshment" to the eyes at the end of this summer. However, I have a few questions... Do you think it looks out of place in my portfolio, being that it is the only piece of food photography? Do you think that I need to upload more food photography images so it is not out of place? Thanks in advance!

Ms. Young,
Your portfolio shows all sorts of photography. So one more subject won't hurt it. Many "experts" say however to focus on only one type of photography subject....like all dogs, all scenics, all food, all people...rather than what you are doing....

you have to start with 1 thing at some point. add more food if your concerned. i wouldn't have it in a gallery of it's own, you should have 10 things or so for a gallery. you can do a series of just watermelon - people eating it. close ups, abstracts of it, etc. or you can add other summer time foods, or any kind of food. or seasonal foods.

no i go against the advice of shooting one type of subject, especially if your trying to sell and your not sure what will sell best. especially online. shoot lots, posts lots, create themes. when i upload i usually have different themes, that then are added to the collective, i have like 40 themes here. variety is better for a customer. having a consistent style is far more important though.

Thank you so much for the feedback, Robert and Mike! I will definatly take these into consideration. If anyone else has further thoughts, I am all ears!
EDIT: Ok, thank you Mike!

Shelby,

Nice shot! I used to shoot a lot of food, for magazines and I would always look through them to get ideas, angles, depth of field, composition, etc. and I think you should too. On the watermelon, I would have come in a bit tighter, and maybe down on it,too.

here's my old web site with some food shots that I did for Travel&Leisure,Food&Wine, etc. Kinda old by today's standard, but good enough back then:

Go to the library and look through magazines or better yet, buy used magazines and cut out the shots you like and would like to do and make a album of them, like I did, when I started.

Good Luck!

I try to think 4 to 6 months ahead, not behind. I would have posted watermelon in May. Other than that, what Mike says, you have to start somewhere and one watermelon image is much, much better than none. :)

i figure the past due topical stuff for this year, is early for next year. this way you can release xmas stuff now or in the winter.

These are all great insights! Rich, I have actually been shooting food for a while... not commercially or anything, though it would be cool! I just do it for fun and when I can.... Like Mike said, though I have not thought of it since now, it is a good idea to have stuff ready for next year! Any more insights welcome!

Hi, Shelby.

For myself I try to offer a great variety of subject matter, yet I don't always name my galleries in such a way as to be more specific than necessary.

While I have shot more than one sunset I have only a couple of actual sunset photographs posted here on FAA. I included them in a gallery called, “skies”.

I have two galleries that are a bit more open to interpretation. One being titled, “Perspective”, and the other titled, “The Simple and Not So Simple”.

This is only an idea, Shelby, but you might give some thought to creating a gallery that may fit a broader category than simply “food photography”.

I see several images in your galleries that would fit into something called, “The Delights of Summer”, or something like that.

By the way, I like your foot photograph named, Foaming Waves. It would fit perfectly in such a gallery.

By the way, I have some photographs that are in more than one of my galleries. I see no problem with that.

These are just some of my thoughts. Take them for what they may be worth.

As for trying to build a gallery of all food shots? Well that is all good and well, but one of the primary subjects you refer to regarding your watermelon shot is indeed Summer.

I submit that there are very few photographs that would be considered out of place in any well rounded photographers portfolio.

At any rate, I hope this helps. Good luck to you, and I look forward to seeing more of your images.

Phooey - people in winter will love the thought of watermelon on a warm summer day - food should do well - if it's a good shot any time of year. It's not seasonal clothes that you are going to put on depending on the weather - this will hang year round to remind one of pleasant times and cold watermelon - besides - they are still picking them in the fields and bringing them to market. Although - this child remembers watermelon at 25˘ and 50˘ for a large "Georgia Rattlesnake" or round dark green "cannon ball" in the day and $5 is just egregious to pay for one now.

I have an "Odds And Ends" gallery for photos that don't fit my other galleries. It has some food in it.

its hard to say if people will buy it to remember summer. the people who may buy it are farmers, watermelon consortium's, and people that sell it. and maybe Gallagher, but it's cut wrong its it for him.
