Caterpillar? If you didn't squash it it may turn into a beautiful butterfly! Maybe someone here knows what kind.

Teresa If it was at your door step at least you did not step on the Caterpillar. Nothing worse than stepping outside in the dark and stepping on a snail. I saw a baby lizard jump out of my shoe that was on the front porch the other day. Could have been a disaster.
