A Little Bird Told Me Today.....and A New Appreciation For Faa!

..... that 500px.com will be closing 500 Art as of Aug 23 and also, in 500 Prime, they will only be offering 'licensing photo" option and not selling images anymore. I was chatting with a guy online and he told me so when I was asking how the 500px licensing image option work. Giving a buyer unlimited permission seemed so unfair for a price of $175! (now they flipped the payout to 70% for photographer and 30% for them. Their pricing for licensing starts at $255 or something like that).

Then i read up on the subject of Pixels.com here and how Sean has written posts to explain about licensing images. Wow, Sean knows what he is doing, i thought. I appreciate how Sean explains things with anticipations of what people may ask.

I am just a kid photographer (figure of speech, it's been 25 years since I've graduated from college...), not even worthy to call myself artist, but I just wanna say there are serious artists here on FAA and I just appreciate and respect FAA!

Funny that you are mentioning this. I was just talking to FAA about licensing and terms and conditions. I am using fotoquote as my guide. I started a discussion on "The Art of Pricing Art" to address some of the things artist have to consider when pricing their art. I included the link to the software. I also found out that the copyright court uses this software as standard.

Hi Fumie,

I mean no disrespect, but I've been in email contact with several people, including Evgeny Tchebotarev the co-founder, at 500px over the last week or two and nothing has been said about this change of direction for 500px. Also, the 23rd is Saturday and not usually a day for a decision like this. I suspect your source is wrong, but it's always fun to hear rumors. :)

I never used 500px but this rumor appears to be validated by their own support section:

Thanks for the link (and the correction) and that's an interesting development.

I used to belong to 500px (quite awhile back), and do not regret leaving there. I had a 'store" there to sell images, and the one thing I didn't care for was the way images were cropped to fit (as I recall) 3 predetermined sizes, although that might have changed by now, but not sure.

I'm sorry, but we are no longer discussing other potential print-on-demand sites, or printers on Fine Art America. We would ask that anyone who wants to discuss those sites to please use their discussion forums.

Before I close this, I would add that I got an email this afternoon from them saying they will continue selling the prints via 500Art... I went to my own link but now it does not give me the option to license the photo... anyway,
Very strange and unreliable, i thought...
