Blog Users: Disqus Or Wordpress Commenting

Hi,

I have a Wordpress blog and am constantly searching for the best plugins to enhance the look, feel and usability of my website. I have always been aware of Disqus and other commenting alternatives, but I never felt the rush to change to one of them and my built in Wordpress commenting system is fine.

I wanted to ask the bloggers here what they think? Do you use Disqus or any other alternative plugins? Or do you just use the native Wordpress system? And, if you are commenting on other blogs or websites in general? Which commenting system do you prefer?

One of the main reasons I am drawn towards Disqus is the ability to log on through your social networks, like Facebook, Twitter and Google+, in order to leave your comment. This can be an easier option for some people, although it could be a useless option for those who are not into social networking.

Good question Conor -- I'm curious to see how others respond. Unlike you, I was not aware of Disqus and would like to know if its service enhances your blog without requiring readers to take additional steps in order to comment. I've had a Wordpress blog for two years and their native system works very well for me, though I'd not be averse to switching to something else.

I have the native jetpack installed on my wordpress blog, but not all of the additions are turned on. Visitors can log in through their wordpress, twitter, facebook or google +, or they can log in with a name, email, website.

I'm not sure what other social networks the native jetpack will allow (my husband does the back end stuff on my website), but he specifically went with jetpack as it is built for wordpress, that generally means fewer issues.

@Michelle,

Jetpack comments is another interesting option. An option which might work for me better than Disqus, as all I really want is to add a feature which allows you to log in via social networks.

What I use: I have always used the native commenting process and I control spammers with Akismet. It seems to have worked for me over the years on a variety of small blog setups we have.

How I comment: I never use a social login because I don't trust any of them to not access my list of "friends"and other info. If I am confronted with a Disqus or other spam-preventative plugin I go away - and do NOT comment. For some reason I don't like the "obstacle" that gets in the way of fluid conversation. Might just be me...but usability studies show that every additional step in an online flow tends to reduce the number of responses or, more importantly, purchases.

YMMV
