Blurb Books...has Anyone Else Created A Book Using Them?

I just recently created a book...photos, design, and layout...for some friends of ours documenting their branding day last year on their ranch.
Check it out here if you'd like: http://blur.by/1kZOPjo

Post a link to your book if you have one. Would love to see what others are creating.

Actually, Diane, I used createspace.com for my recent book. I did so, because Createspace is an Amazon affiliate and my books appears on Amazon.com at no additional charge.

Here's my book:

His Majesties Courageous Highlanders, by Jeffrey Campbell

That's interesting, Jeffrey...I've not heard of createspace.com. I'll check them out. I know Blurb has an affiliation with Amazon, too...but it costs extra to list that way.

Have sales been good through Amazon? Your book looks interesting.

I just listed it two months ago, Diane, and only have three sales. But, I don't promote it, either. There's a huge military following for pre-revolutionary war, they just need to find my book :-)

Our Toronto public library has a book printing program, one can print10 copies of a 150 page book for $145.

Diane,

I ahve a freind that's has printed about 5 books now on Blurb and they all look sensational! He has 3 portfolio books done and then he made 2 books from a recent big photo shoot made and sent to his client and they fell out of their chairs!

I've had a few books done 2-3 years ago in MyPublisher.com and they were pretty bad,as far as color and service/support.

Blurb seems to be the best right now,

Rich

Jeffrey, congratulations on your splendid book, and for doing so much research to present this history so interestingly and beautifully. Well done. Vivian

And for the link to your publisher.....it is a fine-looking tome indeed.

I did a createspace book that just reached enough sales for a payout after about a year. Createspace can produce low priced books but they are not very good about reproducing images. I basically consider it a promotion piece. It includes links back to FAA. (Createspace is owned by Amazon)

On the flipside, Blurb is good about creating photo books but the results are very expensive. Hard to sell.

Books:

"the Quotable Westie" by Edward M. Fielding (available on Amazon) - http://www.amazon.com/Quotable-Westie-Photographs-Edward-Fielding/dp/1481084372/
"The Last Resort - Fine art photographs of Maui, Hawaii" by Edward M. Fielding on Blurb - http://www.blurb.com/b/5052770-the-last-resort

Jeffrey - Interesting book, I had two ancestors in that war out of Massachusetts, one of which I have the muster roll. The French and Indian War radically altered Canada and North America.

Coincidentally, I just saw this article posted on NPR's Facebook page this morning. The headline says "Printing your own book used to be seen as a mark of failure. But now, there are many well-known independent authors who have made a fortune self-publishing online."

WOW, Marlene...you have been busy! What a lovely collection of books.

Thank you, Viv and Jim. Transcribing the old war documents from the mid-1700s proved to be not only daunting, but very rewarding.

Valerie, thanks...the last 3 years Iv'e been concentrating on books...I've added a new medium where there are no 'originals.' The beauty of a book is that it chronicles one's work. I revving up for the next phase of my career.

I used Blurb 2 years ago to make a photo book from our vacation photos of Grand Teton, Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. The book is for us, our memories instead of putting in a photo album. The quality is good. I'll order from them again. I loved the fact I was able to put together the book in Lightroom and upload to blurb. I haven't bother with making a book to actually sell online.

Marlene,

I see you're using MyPublisher. Did you have any "color" issues? I made a few books about 2 years ago and they were using Fuji Digital printers and there was an "automatic" adjustment made to each and every image and at that time, they said they couldn't turn it off! Some type of Auto-Enhancer.

With Blurb, my friends books were more portfolio and then the 2 gifts, since they are indeed expensive to make, but the quality is first rate,so depends on what you're trying to produce, products or portfolios for your self,

Rich

Marlene - just outstanding! You are an inspiration!
I've looked at your books in the past with hopes and plans to also do that, but no time commitment to it. Thank you for posting it here - a great reminder to actually do it!

I've done a couple Blurb books -- never promoted them for sale though. I've just used them for Christmas presents for family and friends. I was very happy with the quality and customer service (one was delivered with an ink blob on one of the pages and they immediately reprinted it and sent it out).

In the old days of vanity printing you'd end up with a garage full of books to peddle. Printing one at a time isn't the most effective method but it saves room for the car!
