Photographs To Paintings

Hi.I'm new here at FAA and I'm trying a few things out and looking for some advice.
I'm giving a painting effect to some of my photographs. I was thinking is it best just to have one effect say water colour or maybe two effects like water colour and oils .This would give more choice or is it just too much.
Thanks for your thoughts

I call it the Instagramification of photography. Just add a "filter."

Roy, my opinion is that it is entirely up to you how many variations of effects you want to include in your gallery, but keep in mind that the thumbnails of those types of images usually don't look all that different from the photos themselves, and having several very similar images one right after the other can dilute the impact of the image in the buyer's eye. I think it's a better idea to choose the one you think looks the best and go with that one, though I have done it both ways when I absolutely can't decide.

BTW, welcome to FAA!

Hi,
Cool photo, btw! I'm new to painting photographs. I'm taking a class online with Melissa Gallo on painting photos. She has one using Photoshop and a new one coming out in September using Corel Painter x3. You may want to check out her website. It is a fun class.
My thoughts...whatever makes you happy is what is right. I don't think there are any rules when it comes to art. Follow your 'heart song'. Best of luck!

April. I see what you mean about not seeing the effect in thumbnails. The image above is an oil paining effect and you can't tell even at that size.

Do not put it under paintings on the categories though as it is not one. It becomes digital art

Perhaps create a gallery called Digital Art or Painterly Digital Effect or Digital Painted Photographs

The thumbnails don't do any justice to the work that goes into some images. In fact, some of the effects applied just don't show very well on the image page either unless the high resolution preview is used. I'm of the school of one choice... but it is all a personal decision.

Everyone has opinions about working and marketing these effects. Joseph called it the "Instagramification" with the addition of "just add a filter".

Not everybody just adds a filter! That is too simplistic, though I can understand the thought. Many folks work on their images for countless hours to get them to where they want them. They hone their craft just as a great oil painter hones his craft to the point to where he/she can finish a masterwork in just several hours. Instapainting! The painter is so good at what he does what he just does it all in one sitting.

I took many hours on this particular image. It wasn't a click of a filter. http://glenn-mccarthy.artistwebsites.com/featured/life-imitates-art-cafe-glenn-mccarthy-art-and-photography.html

And there are countless others that have taken the time to work each photo. Take a look at Bob Galka's Work. http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/bob-galka.html?tab=artwork

Nice to have you aboard.

Good fortunes.

Thanks Isabella.I have put in the description that it is a photo with a painting effect.
Jeffery I have done just that called Paint Effect
Glenn.Thanks for the links.Fantastic images.
A filter is quick an easy but it will not give that individual look to an image

Just wanted to get my two cents in! I use many, many filters on one piece of my photography and to get the picture to my liking it could not only take hours, but days. Good luck and glad to have you aboard Roy!

...keep them honest Isabella...goodonya.....

paintings are for painters.....

Right on, Enver, Isabella. Fact is, when I comment to a painter using paint, and am inclined, I even use the term understood by painters..........'painterly'.........as a compliment..........

not about a filter.

Welcome Roy, I admire your thoughts and appreciate the answers to your quandry - because the answers do clarify just what is a 'painting' vs 'painterly' filter.
