That's the only time I wish I had a 600 mm zoom. I have a 300 mm, but you can't really get close with it.

I often wonder about this. Every time there's an eclipse, someone posts a thread about it, usually followed by another thread of pictures which are essentially identical to the zillions of eclipse pictures posted from all those prior eclipses. What I wonder is, is this mostly a case of "me too" photography, where people feel the need to prove that they can shoot an eclipse, too?

EDIT: Or, as Mary notes, is it about the gear?

Pretty much, but it's also something to do while watching the eclipse. A lot of people need to be doing something at all times after all, even if it's something millions of others are doing.

Great upbeat attitude, Joshua House -- cheers! :)

Thanks for the reminder Roy....

I think eclipses are cool. Now if we can only get a meteor shower in my area without cloud cover, I might stay up for it.

If it weren't mid week I'd give it serious thought, but the fact I'd then have to come back into center city Houston with the rest of the commuters makes it out of the question.

So many photos are shots of the same thing - take sunsets - although each one is ever so slightly a bit different. How many pictures of the Statue of Liberty, the NYC skyline, the golden gate bridge, etc. etc. even in places like National Parks, the Hoover Dam, Las Vegas, etc. etc. Heaven forbid another pic of the slot canyon called antelope or Niagara Falls (even I've got a couple of those).

Some things are endlessly fascinating to most humans.

The moon, and good chocolate, are two of those things.

Carmen, I said endlessly fascinating -- not endlessly frustrating! ;-)

You could say the same thing about a lot of bird and wildlife photography. A lot of it is just saying "I saw this" - Yet the fun is in the pursuit.

A lot of those icon shots sell. Each time they are taken the lighting and/or perspective changes.

Wendy -- only if taken too seriously -- NOT :)

The premise of repetition is at the very core of our existence.... the process of iteration in nature. Ad infinitum's not ad nauseam, for everyone ;)
