Pictures Of Hotel Lobbies/bar Areas/ Etc....

I am wondering if it is "legal" for us to sell photos of decor in lobbies/hotels/bar areas, etc.... Are these areas considered private property? Can we sell photos of these things on FAA? Any insight would be most appreciated

Is there a market for a hotel lobby?
if not, I guess you wouldn't have to wonder if it's okay.

It would be private property and while each place is different, my hunch is that they typically do not allow photography. Of course, it may be a scenario for "ask forgiveness rather than permission."

I feel like the real adventure is taking the photo and then making them pursue you! In fact, I'm coming to the place of believing that those who worry too much about this kind of thing should possibly get another vocation. I know that seems harsh... but the feeling of having your hands tied at every turn feels much worse.

Gonna just drop into the millions of opinions category again...

Depends on the hotel lobby and restaurant dining area - if it's a "place to be remembered" - might just sell.

okie dokie, Glenn, i'll get the ball rolling but just saying one thing, then I will bow out....
That attitude is what we are dealing with all the time as artists..."I'll just 'borrow' this pic I found on the internet and let them come find me. i won't ask permission, just beg forgiveness."

Marlene,

I might be wrong, but as I understood the question it was,

"I am wondering if it is "legal" for us to sell photos of decor in lobbies/hotels/bar area?"

So I take that to mean taking a picture of the entire area, not just an item of decor. I answered according to that broad specification. If the question was ."If I take a photo of Marlene Burns art decorating the walls at the Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit, can I sell it here on FAA?"... my answer would be different.

If we always have to be questioning whether or not we can take a photo of the Golden Gate Bridge because it was designed by somebody, we are the most miserable of people. Photography seems to have it's roots in "going out on a limb".

That's my direct point.

I noted that someone on FAA recently sold a photo of the Chihuly ceiling in the lobby of the Bellagio in Las Vegas.

This is an interesting thread.

You need to get the permission of the owners of the buildings because those are private areas, as in owned by them. Unless owned by the public...which most are not

Hotels are private property.....as are hospitals and the like.
Just try to take a picture in a hospital and see how fast you are thrown right out and camera confiscated...just sayin'

Yes they did, Jim.....so are we to assume that photographer had permission from Dale?
not.

I have posted this question because just yesterday I went to a hotel/gorgeous roof top bar in NYC, but I called first and asked.... when the manager of the Bar said to me "You cannot take professional photographs here or you will be thrown out".... I was guessing that he meant "expensive equipment, i.e., lighting, tripod, etc." I was taken aback, but when I actually went there with my camera (and only my camera)... there were TONS of people taking photos... SO, I have this really cool shot of this place and am wondering if I can post it here on FAA and sell it here??? What do you all think?

I'd say no

I'm sticking with no...having been someone who has been thrown out...and for using my iPhone!
Id evengo further to suggest that a professional photo would not mean just the equipment but the usage..and that includes sales.

Here is my main image in question... taken from a roof top bar... where it is clearly taken at a specific place called "The Press Lounge"....
