What Was Your Favorite Vacation And Why?

I like using various materials in my art pieces especially airplane parts and recycled material because it reminds me of going on an adventure. In searching for materials I try to incorporate many vibrant, glossy paint, cardboard, paper, cut aluminum scrap. By treating the entire airplane cockpit as a found object I think it brings Duchamp and Moholy-Nagy into the 21st century. I am able to amalgamate the conflicting doctrines of Abstract Expressionism (action, gesture, artistic subjectivity), Pop (gloss, mass-production, found-objects), and Minimalism (reduction of subject, focus on art as object.) But enough about my art work....what was your fav vacation and why?

Richard, lovely images of Glacier. I have been there camping, and on the Canadian side Waterton. It is stunning. I have loved all my vacations! But I think my favorite was visiting the place where baby gray whales are born -- Magdalena Bay , the Sea of Cortez and being so close to the whales. I was able to touch a baby whale. We camped in a totally secluded beach where I could hear the whales "blowing" in the stillness of the night. Even better, it was with a paid excursion so I did not have to pitch my own tent, and even had my meals cooked! Sorry, I do not have any good photos to share.

My girlfriend Penne and I vacationed in Aruba for a week. Later, we married and had a daughter. Penne has since passed away, but I live with my daughter and granddaughter.

I love reading about the great times people have had on their vacations. Going on a trip each time is like an adventure. I heard many people talk about their…beachfront or being on the beach. I remember one vacation in Florida where we stepped out of the door and we were right on the beach. The food was excellent, you could have anything you want and eat to your heart’s content and this included beverages.
I think about that vacation and the great time that our kids had. The smiles on their faces is what I remember the most.

I have all these trips buzzing around in my head now. I like something about each of them...the pink sand and limestone rocks of Bermuda, the Mayan Ruins and Isle of Mujeres near Cancun, the history of St. Augustine, and turquoise water of the Gulf side of the state. I'm not a fan of hot Florida though or their windswept beaches and birds as big as mini jets swooping down. Perhaps it is because I live by the coastline, but eventually...a beach is a beach to me, and I ask myself why I bothered to spend money when I can roll down the street for free.

I loved the quaintness of New England towns....Mystic, CT, old Portland, ME, the islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, Newport, RI, and the wonder of Mt. Washington in Bretton Woods, NH, both the hotel and mountains.

I've been to New Mexico and traveled to Colorado three times....Chimney Rock, Independence Pass, Wolf's Creek, rode from Pagosa Springs to Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs, Garden of the Gods, and took the cog railway up to Pike's Peak. While the mountains and rock formations are sights to behold, that thin air and dryness ruined it for me. Texas is too flat for my taste.

Philly is a trip into history. NYC was fun because it's both historic and round the clock life. Atlantic City...that was an experience into the outlandish. Chicago...been four times...eh...I travel there now only because my son is there. Indiana...again...never would have gone if my son wasn't there. Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore...was beautiful until I was by the water's edge and saw smokestacks on either side of me.

Which leaves Washington, DC...my favorite. I think everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. It's moving, inspiring and educational.

Without a doubt the Mauna Kea Resort in Hawaii...Paradise on earth...Snorkeling in crystal clear water...horseback riding every morning at the Parker Ranch...I could go on forever...

From 1999-2004 we used to vacation in Glen Arbor Michigan, right by Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Brilliant blue skies and water, and the light sand of the Caribbean, but with dark green forests, and a nice hilly topography. Moderate temperatures and old barns, old buildings and fantastic golf courses. A photographer and artists dream. My kids were in middle school, and I remember it as the most idyllic and beautiful vacations we ever had. Well the kids are in their 20's and I am 10 years older, and we are going back in a couple weeks. Hopefully it will be just as beautiful, and this time I will have some art to show from the vacation.

Several years ago I took a solo cruise on the Disney Wonder (my family and I are all Disney fans) to the Bahamas. It was the most relaxing vacation I've ever taken.

Good question...But since I've gone on over 100 vacations I can't really say...I just got back from Central Vermont where my wife's family lives on 40 acres of land up on a hill with creeks, pond, moose, bear, coyote, etc....and forest everywhere....Oh, and they also have fancy chickens that give us eggs for breakfast.

Favorite at this stage of life is hard to go with - My first real vacation I spent a week in Kyoto - back in '66. Perhaps the most memorable. In 1969 I went to the Canary Islands for a week. In 1970 I drove all the way across the United States from the outer banks of NC to San Francisco and back - a two week trip with stops in several places but the first time I'd ever seen the Grand Canyon. and then up through Utah to Idaho and then back down and across through Reno and Lake Tahoe. After I was married there was the trip to Florida and then up the Appalachians to Maine. A vacation move trip again from NC, to Florida, to Indianapolis, to Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, down through Wyoming and Colorado, down through Utah and Nevada to the California Desert. there have been so many more 'day trips' or three day trips - it's difficult to pick out the best or one that didn't have something truly memorable in it. There is always something new, something fabulous, someone new to meet, a different view, food. I love to travel and have a hard time sitting still. Oh, I've been on a few beaters too - but overall - they have been really good. this last one that turned around with 8 inches of snow in Utah and a 100 mile drive out of snow fall was a real highlight of the trip - I hate snow - but that was beautiful
