I will be corrected if wrong, but I do not think so. I agree that links and more would be a very nice addition to the description area, but AFAIK you cannot link, modify text, or precipitate any html in the description area.

Nope. You can't do this. It's to prevent abuse by spammers, which would be rampant if this were permitted. Remember, the site has to work well in a 99.99% automated fashion.
If you allow such links, the spammers flock to a site and ruin it.
