The Yosemite Valley Chapel, which is the oldest structure in Yosemite Valley, was built in 1879. The United States National Park Service gave the Yosemite Chapel the Historic American Building status in 1965 and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 12, 1973.

The cost to build the Chapel was between three and four thousand dollars, US in 1897.

The Chapel was designed by Charles Geddes, an accomplished church architect from San Francisco, California, who designed the Chapel in a New England Carpenter Gothic style to seat 250 people for the California State Sunday School Association. The contactor was Geddes’s son-in-law, Samuel Thompson also of San Francisco. The Chapel is approximately 1,470 square feet in area, built with board and batten siding with a noticeable steeple.
