Description
Col. Hub Zemke was the 56th and later 479th Fighter Group commander flying P-47s and P-51s. Fluent in German and some Russian, he became senior ranking officer of allied prisoners of war at Stalag Luft I after his P-51 lost a wing in violent clear air turbulence and he parachuted into enemy hands.
Credited with 17.75 aerial victories, Zemke later quipped, "If I had been a better shot, I would have had twice as many!"
