Description
A lone wolf in stand of birches calls to it's mate.Autumn colors set off the birch trees and the gray wolf. I have some very special memories of interactions with wolves and wolf mixes. The first were at the pow wow grounds in Cutler Ontario -where we played with a wolf mix (not realizing it at the time - until the day we were leaving when I looked into it's golden eyes! and it rolled over in submissive behavior and we asked it's owner about it - he confirmed it to be 3/4 wolf) Then a few years later Mission:Wolf - a traveling educational program for wolves came through my home town and I once again found myself right next to a wolf - this time purebred. It was incredible to be so close to them and look into their eyes.
Canis lupus or the gray wolf or grey wolf is a species of canid which is native to the wilderness and remote areas of North America, Eurasia, and North Africa. The largest member of its family, the males average weight is aboout 95-99 lb, and females about 79-85 lb. Proportion and appearance wise it is very similar to a German shepherd,or sled dog, but with a larger head, narrower chest and longer legs. The grey wolfs tail is also straighter and it has bigger paws. It's winter fur is long and bushy, and mostly a mottled gray color, although some may be nearly pure white, red, or brown to black. The wolf is the sole ancestor of the dog. It is a social animal, travelling with it's mate and offspring, adult offspring included.Wolves frequently hunt as a pack, working together to separate their prey and take it down together.
